Jivemaster Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 As the OP asks about a Petzl Navajo which is an EU / CE known and approved type, the more important issue is surely that as one of this specific harness's (suggested) five service years has expired. There is the issue of continuing inspection to consider. Hence my earlier post that it is poor value at more than its retail price.
Pete McCrea Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 I find it a tad disturbing that a company is 'Recycling' the Personal Protective Equipment that they issue to their employees. If they are simply asking for it back so they can store it or something of that nature, then that's fair enough. If however they are looking to re issue it, I'd have questions about that approach. If it has the correct paper trail to support it, then maybe, but it just makes me uneasy. I personally wouldn't reissue equipment like that. My Fall Arrest kit is mine. I, and only I use it. I do not lend it out, let others wear it or use the other hardware. That way I know it's condition. In terms of getting good prices on the kit, when I bought mine I shopped around. For the Navaho Complet and double legged fall arrest with scaff clips, I paid about £150-200 at the time, in Stealth black. It does try and cut your neck off if you don't have a Polo shirt on, but the rest of it is damn comfy. It is the same harness that the other places were selling, just that the company in question did a really good price on it. As long as you get the relevant paper work, then surely the price doesn't matter? If the same product is being sold in two places for a £200 difference, and you are sure it is the same product, then all being equal, what's wrong with buying the lower priced one? Or you can pay for the staff do at the more expensive places Christmas Party.....
Jivemaster Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 tad disturbing { snipped } Fine BUT, in employment the PPE belongs to the employer, and HSAW specifies that the employee WILL use the PPE provided. The employer is responsible for its suitability. In self employment you are both user and provider of the PPE. No employer wants to store PPE as it will go out of test period and likely later get used with attatched liability.
voodooman Posted April 1, 2007 Author Posted April 1, 2007 I appear to have opened a can of worms again.Little DJ, where did you get that for £200?The company in question is a rather reputable one, they do get their gear checked professionally as far as I'm aware, and maintain good records. But yes they do 'recycle' it. I was just wondering if it was legal I guess. I don't know. just a bit miffed as I didn't factor in having to shell out a few hundred quid (That I haven't got, freelance world has been very quite in Brum this month!) this month on kit just to work.
