dickropa
Hi can someone please help a Layman!!!! The technical information on projectors is a nightmare, and I need help in some suggestions without the force of a salesperson pushing their product. I am searching for a projector which will be used primarily for showing videos, hence a 16.9 format although I may want to show a 4.3 aspect, but 16. 9 is the priority. It will need to be a minimum of 3000 lumens, and ideally have a reasonably short throw distance, without the expense of purchasing a wide angled lens. Reverse and forward projection is a must. Do not mind purchasing 2nd hand, ( might have to due to budget) but new would be advantage due to lamp life. Budget.well it's tight !!! top wack £1200, but the cheaper the better as long as it does the job. Can anyone help? Please. Cheers Dick
Andrew C
Have a look at Projector Central. Quite a useful calculator, but ISTR it is US based so prices not relevant.
Bryson
Also: What are you using it for? Touring? Installation? Theatre? Corporate? Will it be used in dark rooms, or lit stages, or outdoors? You say primarily showing videos, but do you have a preference for what input you want? S-video, composite or component?Does it need a VGA input at all? If so, what is lowest resolution you can live with? When you say short throw, how short?
stebee
Hi, I suggest you narrow the field a bit by answering the questions set out by Bryson in the earlier post, then have a look on a site like http://www.projectors.co.uk and see if anything fits the bill. Don't get hung up in the 16:9/4:3 question as a projector will only show what you give it. Also something outputting only 16:9 will smoke your budget before you even see it! Obviously Resolution is going to be a factor so go for the best possible within budget. And don't forget to look at DLP's especially if showing "movies". hope this helps Ste

As I'm sure it appears I'm not a wizard! and I have looked at the most of the web sites, but you need to know the tech to go with the info!!!! Primarily I need to be able to show music videos played via a dvd player. It will also be used by person(s) showing material, photo's etc from laptops. it does need to be portable, but I'm not afraid of a little weight! It will be used in larger venues as I have a small 1800 lumens for smaller venues. As for the "throw" then I know some are better than others, it is the ones that are better than the others I am after !!!!!VGA and resolution is all betond me I'm afraid. Hope you are able to respond again. Many thanks. andy_s
last year we bought a pair of Sanyo PLC-XT 16 projectors which we're very happy with, using them for similar things to you: bright,(rated 3.5k lumens) , shortcut buttons on top for essential things like focus, keystone, zoom, easy menu system to work through for less regularly accessed features. non interchangeable lens, but reasonably good zoom range. we paid about 2k each for them which is outside your budget, but second hand may be acceptable price-wise. we use them in glass-sided non blacked-out sunny rooms for powerpoint, and they are acceptable - wouldn't try to show a DVD or Video in these circumstances though. In reasonably well dimmed rooms, they work very well for their price point.
soundo26
can't really beat a 4500 lumen Sanyo XP55 or one of it's clones for that sort of price, you should get some change too.And if you buy from the right dealer there are lots of offers of other things thrown in too at the moment! ivojo
I don't think you'll get 16:9 and 3000 ANSI lumens new for £1200 but the Sanyo PLC-XU100 and Optoma EP780 would be worth a look if you'd settle for 4:3. Bear in mind you might want to go to 4000 ANSI as you'll loose some of the brightness to letterbox when displaying 16:9 on a 4:3 projector. Hi can someone please help a Layman!!!! browna
Try the projector search on www.projectorpoint.co.uk! It worked for me! If not contact an audio-visual based comapny or projector point themselves!
