ghance Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 hi, over the years I've worked with a number of french companies and have picked up a few terms along the way: tarpaulin = bâcheladder = échellePM = regisseur general etc etc anyone know of an on-line glossary for everything? profiles, follow spot, radio mic etc etc? I learn them, but forget them as soon as I move onto the next project. please don't bother posting links to babel etc etc.. just the theatre specific ones please. ta mucho .g
peternewman Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 If one doesn't exist and you do manage to learn them and then forget them, it could well be a great candidate for a wiki page as you and other people could add to it as you find them, then next time you can just look at the page to remind yourself of any you've forgotten.
ghance Posted March 23, 2007 Author Posted March 23, 2007 yeah.. sounds like a good idea... so what catagory & title would you say? FAQ: FRENCH - terms, abbreviations and acronyms?
DavidLee Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 A Google search on "French Theatre Terms" would have helped you! Try le "Glossaire des Termes Techniques du Spectacle" - http://perso.numericable.fr/~fborzeix/fred...fo3glo/gtts.htm Most of the site is in French but a lot of it is illustrated and there are a lot of French explanations of English terms. You can glean a lot with a little understanding of the language. There is French/English parallel index (translating in both directions) that is very useful. Hint French for Index is Index and Translation is la Traduction so you should be able to find the link in the page index. The jokes section seems very familiar - some things appear to be universal! eg: Lors d'un soundcheck, le sonorisateur répète inlassablement "1 2 test, 1 2 test...". David
peternewman Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 I'll leave the page title up to you, but perhaps French Translations or similar? As to categories probably FAQ and then Lighting etc as relevant depending on the translations. Perhaps have sub headings per department depending on what words you end up with.
ed_ Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 I heard tell of a series of phrase books for international touring crews, with a page for rigging, a page for backline, etc. A quick Google can't turn up anything useful - out of print maybe? It is quite possible that I have heard wrong too... has anyone any information? Apparently the last page of each book contained suitably profane vocabulary should one need to berate their local crew...
ghance Posted March 23, 2007 Author Posted March 23, 2007 hey ed. I've seen a touring phrase book. french publication, so french into english... I haven't seen the reverse.. anyone seen such a thing? and DavidLee thanks for the link.. well googled. anymore u find like that let us know. but honestly, u think I post here without a good google 1st??
Grahame Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 I beleive the book you're looking for is Theatre Words. Their site mentions that they are working on a computerised version. You can also apparently order it through the ABTT
