Jivemaster Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 What about a long wooden box painted white inside and black outside with lots of coloured bulbs inside, and slots cut to let the light out? Possibly with diffuser on the slots

Ike Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 These effects are the long (2 or 3 metre plus) thin strips of controllable medium which look a little like neon, come in many colours, but are NOT neon, as they can be fast-switched and (possibly) dimmed. What makes you think they aren't neon? Neon can be dimmed and switched very quickly. Commercial flashers for signs will usually flash to a couple of Hertz and I've seen tubes flashed much, much faster for months without failure. As for dimming I've ran a neon sign transformer from the output of a bog standard dimmer with no problems and the dimming curve was better than I expected. Neon isn't without its disadvantages; its fragile, it needs specialist equipment to make and requires high voltage (although cold cathode is slightly lower) however it is very energy efficient and looks fantastic (if well made). Lots of neon sign suppliers will also have a number of straights than have been removed from installations that they will often supply (complete with transformer) for very little.

musht Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 Try a little bit and see if it suits, you can shop around and get price right down if you buy a lot, but EL string is really not very bright, at all. Can be very effective but needs to be very dark. Diameter , 2.3mm isn`t very thick, there is a 5mm around with slightly thicker core and wide ones around with simply thicker sheath. Green is about brightest, red at faint glow end of scale. Anytronics make analogue controlled inverters for the stuff.

musht Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 Anytronics EL controllers: http://www.anytronics.com/download/lit_wir...e/lightwire.pdf EL tape might be worth a google as well, stuff like: http://www.flatlite.com Though lot of people now make it, great for Chinese character sets ;-) Like all EL brightness function of frequency, higher frequency means higher brightness but shorter life, 2000 hours is good to 50% intial brightness. If you cut it seal ends really well, moisture kills it stone dead.
