Interview at Rose Bruford

Hello all!

I have been called to interview at Rose Bruford. Is there anyone who has been to Rose Bruford, is there now or has attended an interview, who could give me some advice? I have not been asked to prepare anything for the interview, is this the same as you? I will take a portfolio with me but is there anything else I should know?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks, Andrew

Which course are you applying for?

Maybe a stupid question but jus checking!

There are a couple of us Rose Bruford Students from Lighting Design on this board, thoughout the years ( Yr 1 2 and 3 )

For interview, we werent asked to prepare anything either, but take a portfolio with you, maybe some pictures of shows within it with supporting text, Rig Plans, Reviews if any were done etc...

When I was at interview I had a portfolio, Nick Hunt looked through my portfolio, asked a few questions about some of the bits, and then about why I wanted to do the course, etc... Was quite an informal interview...

Although if you come out of the interview feeling like " ive f ucked that up!"

Dont worry!!!!! Wait till you get the results from it before making assumptions!

He likes to know "what you think" about things!

Have the usual questions answered like, Why Rose Bruford, Why Lighting, Why You, just in case.

You get to look around the site, and see what there is at the college, facilities wise ( you'll see more than our yr did as we had a building site )

Good Luck

Also use the chance to sort of interview the college if you like... like colin said, have a look around the site and see what you think. In my interview Nick asked me a few questions were sort of open ended so I could give an answer but ask nick a few questions at the time, remember, they want you to go there as much as you want to go there so don't let the fact that its a big institution play on your mind.

Good Luck, and I hope you do well.

Dont Know Rose Bruford in particular, But; At interview you must show an interest in the subject and a commitment to complete the course and have a starting knowledge of the subject. expect to provide evidence. They dont expect you to have so much experience that you are already through the course. Also you are commiting to a life with them for a couple of years so chose your partner well.

They will be looking for enthusiasm and a sense of committment. Don't try and fabricate any prior experience you have had and be honest about any technical experience - they will want to know what you have learnt (the good and bad - show that you have learnt from your mistakes!!) from production work in the past. if your experience is limited - make sure you have thought about the reasons why you want to do the course and what you could offer in terms of a person (i.e. hard working, genuine interest in the industry and respect for the work that will be required) not the fact that you rigged a parcan last year.

Hope that helps.........good luck!! Let us know how you get on!

EDIT - Also worth having a look at the earlier pinned topic in this forum on interview technique......I would put a link, but for some reason it doesn't seem to be working!?!

Had the interview on Tuesday. It was quite tough. The course director gave me a bit of a grilling but I think I did ok. He was a bit intimidating and didn't give me any idea on how I was doing! For people who have applied or go to Rose Bruford how long does it take for them to let me know?

Thanks, Andrew

That sounds like my experience of the interview process!

It depends really on UCAS for your result, I think I got mine about 4weeks later - but really depends...

Good luck though and if you join in 2004 then some of us here may see you soon!

All the best

So this lighting design course...

What training does it give you? Surely there cant be a year every year (say 30 students) graduating and getting jobs. Do they train you in any other fields - relationships with other departments? Practical skills for being on stage? ie almost all the prod lx's in the world can also fly cos there is not always some to humpf. Knot tying, for picking up tripes? Stage awareness so you dont die? Just interested in finding out, not trying to start a cat fight....

Thats more of the stage management course although the L.D'S and S.M's both do a carousel in the first year around the various courses, costume, scenic arts, sound, lighting and stage management. I'm not sure what the L.D's do for the stage management part of it.

The benefit of the college is that the course can be directed to suit you, so if you wanted to learn how to tie a knot or to fly then there would be somebody, tutor or student to teach you.

The current first year has 16 students on it... it did start off as 18 but people leave.

Past students have gone on to do a whole range of things, most of them working freelance but others working for companies such as white light and SLX.

We don't "study" lighting design as such, its alot about interpretation and why we think like we think.... what we think we know, we don't actually know but what we don't know we actually do.... or something along those lines.

But then its not all about theory, in the first year we work alot in the lighting labs (basically scaled down rigs, mini lamps and such like) and some in the theatres. and then in the second and third years moving into larger venues like The Rose theatre and some London venues , Battersea for example.

We also recieve stuff like rigging, access and power intall training, always handy!

Hope this clarifies what you wanted to know
