chrishandcock
At the college I attend, we have a le maitre Neutron XS Hazer. It has a 3 pin XLR input for 0 -10 volt control. I have seen the DMX converters for these but they are very expensive. We also have a Jem Zr-12 smoke machine. We have a DMX converter for this, but it outputs on a 5 pin din plug. Just wondering if anyone knew if there was a way to wire the 5 pin din to a 3 pin XLR to allow it to work with the hazer. If not I've seen a cheap Rosco 1700 DMX converter that outputs on a 3 pin XLR... Just wondering if this would be compatible. Chris
SmokeMonkey
Does the Jem DMX converter output 0 - 10v? If it does, then give it a try. I would imagine there'll be a pinout online somewhere. You might even be able to butcher a midi cable to save wiring half of the cable. I used to have trouble finding solderable midi connectors a few years ago when I needed them regularly. It might also pay to check if it's + or - 10v before you blow it up. If not, you could contact anytronics (who make the PCB in the XS DMX converters for Le Maitre) and they might send you a circuit diagram if you point out it's an educational environment. Then you could make your own. I believe the Le Maitre units are about £100. Their phone number is 02392 599410 which would put them portsmouth way. They refer to the board as a 'DMX decoder' and their PCB identifier code is "PCB1430". Is that a curly tube XS or a straight?
chrishandcock
Well I've found out the pin out of the DMX converter is (pin 2 = 0 Volts) and (pin 5 = 0-10 volts)and the input to the hazer is, (pin 1 = 0 volts) and (pin 2 = 0-10 volts) so I presume I can just link them up... pin 2 to pin 1 and pin 5 to pin 2. Jivemaster
And where do these volts come from? Is there another pin with 10 or15 v on somewhere, or a battery. Volts do not come from the DMX line (or shouldnt).
chrishandcock
Well I'm pretty sure it's not through the DMX... I agree that shold have virtually no power coming down it at all... But I was thinking it may send it from the 0-10 volt pin to the 0 volt pin, and the converter acts like a switch between them??? And I'm now thinking this may work better??? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rosco-1700-DMX-remot...1QQcmdZViewItem
Brian
Well I'm pretty sure it's not through the DMX...I'm fairly certain that the XS gives out a supply of 12v on pin 3 of the XLR.
chrishandcock
Well if it's twelve volts on pin 3... any idea how I would connect that to the zr-12 converter... that obviously need to go into one of the pins of the 5 pin din... I can't find any info on the zr-12 converter... does anyone know???

He's the service manager there. Use their normal phone number. I have some schematics of the XS which I'll email you. I have sent a PM with my email address.
