hello guys , I have just purchased some etc source 4 pars for the first time and I have a question.

The lenses when placed should be facing inwards or out,I have noticed in a lot of circumstances especially at trade fairs where they are used the lenses are fitted in facing inwards and I was wondering what the reason was? does it help in any way?

can you explain the reason behind this please Gareth as I am not sure why. I thought it would be like most lenses where they bow outwards

I must admit, this is something I keep meaning to check...!

On our multi-par clones, our lenses face with the convex side to the front - mainly because that seemed logical when fitting them, as it has the beam angle stamped on the front ....

BUT when they went out on a hire, the guy brought them back asking if I realised they were all the wrong way round.... He had genuine S4 pars and they were apparently the other way...

I really must check this!

The reason for it is that that's how the optics in the S4 Par were designed - simple as that. As for the rationale behind it - well, you'd have to ask the ETC design engineers who designed it.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but according to Manual the lenses must face with the coloured dot facing outwards which would also suggest, where lens type is applicable, that convex side goes to the front.

The fundamental error that you're making there, Nic, is to read the manual for completely the wrong fixture. What you should've been reading is the one for Source4 PARs, instead of the ones for the profiles.

From the S4 PAR manual, from the section on fitting lenses :

Hold the lens by the edge, and position it so the convex side faces

the back of the luminaire

The lens is designed to be fitted the concave way around - bending into the fixture, towards the lamp.

It's to do with the optics and reflector.

Many pepele make this mistake.

I bought a load from the Dome Auction and they were supplied with the lens's the wrong way around as well eg Convex out!!

In addition to the facts above, from a functional standpoint, have you tried installing them convex-out? They are MUCH more difficult to install and remove in this configuration.

Also, convex-in keeps lens flare to a minimum.

Hmmmm

Oh well - guess I'll be changing the multi-pars next time I have an hour or three spare! (Good job they're not up in the grid!!)

That's always assuming they're the same as the REAL S4's......

Suppose that's what you get for NOT RTFM!

Mind you, the S4 blurb does say it won't affect the optice, but does make it easier to remove and prolongs gel life.

I wonder why? Better airflow, or a slightly different focus for the IR component..?

Terralec do a nifty little tool for getting the lenses out of source 4's - it works!
Yup. Every time I send an order to CPC I forget to order one!!
