Hi all,

Just wondering if any of you have had a chance to look at or try out the new Robe 700 range?

I know they are new but I would love to know what they are like, (if they are anything like the 575 at I'm sure they will be great)

They seem to be very similar to the Mac 700 (but seems it's Robe should be a bit more user friendly - in my personal opinion):D

What do you all think?

Also, despite the fact they are new, does anyone know any hire company's round the country (specifically the south west) that stock them yet or are likely to bring them into stock?

cheers

Sam

On what basis do you make this statement?

Eh?! So you ask for people's opinions and views, in the absence of any of your own, on a piece of kit that just this morning you recommended to someone in another thread as a replacement for a Mac700? Are you normally in the habit of recommending equipment that you don't have a clue about?

I'm fascinated to know why you recommended this product

I have heard a lot about this product from my boss because we recommend it to some of our clients now but we don't personally stock it and because of this I have not had a chance to have an in depth look as of yet unlike my boss who had a direct demo

sorry if I phrased it wrong

what I was meant was what do you think of it looking at the spec or the unit itself

Your "boss"? Your "clients"? Your profile says you're a 1st-year BTEC student - are you actually working for a lighting company, then?

yes I do work for a lighting company

I work weekends and every bit of time that I am not in college (I need to update my profile as I am now in my last few months of college)

So why ask here, ask your boss. :D

Perphaps he thought for one second that coming onto a forum to ask a question about a product, he may have got a friendly / useful reply - obviously not!!

I thought that I would ask you guys to get a selection of ansers not just from one person - this is the sensible thing to do isnt it?

or would you go and use a brand new piece of kit without getting a second opinion of it?

Can I speak without my mod hat on?

The Blue Room is a very popular forum (looking at the post count against time it's been going) and we get a lot of new members who join to get answers on specific problems. Sometimes they stay - sometimes they get the answer and clear off, never to be seen again.

The snag we seem to have is that the quality, not quantity of posts does, at least to me, seem to be going down.

I have no probelm whatsoever with young people, beginners of any age, or seasoned professionals who pretend to know everything.

The thing I do have serious issues with is with content that puts the Blue Room into the position of being smirked, or even laughed at.

I've bumped into a few people over the past few months who I respect in the industry, who didn't know I kind of 'live' here - and they were taking the mickey out of us. The same thing has happened on another very well respected internet forum where most members are well qualified, very senior members of the pro audio community.

This negativity towards the Blue Room in general really upset me, as a regular contributer.

Over the years, moderation here has been tough - then softened as a result of complains about being too hard, then tougher again - as a result of complaints about being too soft, and then in recent months perhaps softer again.

Without meaning to offend the OP - we have a question about a new model, then a statement about user friendliness on something the OP hasn't touched - then a cross post in another thread.

Is it any wonder some members read both, and wonder what on earth is going on?

We have people on the forum who are in charge at big venues, we also have their follow spot ops, who work a few hours a week while being at college or school. On here, the follow spot ops claim to be lighting designers and have the same number of stars on their collars. The trouble is, their first few sentences give the game away.

I don't mind helping anybody, and often do. I'm having real problems trying to help recently - the question I answer gets changed by the next post and frankly - anybody reading the forum must think we are a bunch of idiots from the quality of our posts.

If I post rubbish - then I am quite happy for it to be removed from public sight - even the mods post c*ap sometimes - usually late at night when far too tired. This may (sorry allsounds) appear unfriendly, but the quality threshold MUST be maintained or we will become a joke - and if this happens, I don't want anything at all to do with it.

Sorry for hijacking the thread - but this one is a very good example of how bad they can become.

If anyone feels strongly about this subject - please start a new thread in a suitable place. The BR should be a place where pros and beginners can learn from each other - lately not much learning seems to be happening.

Certainly!

And I agree with everything you've said Paul.

As one who has also posted the occasional mis-informed bit of info in the past and been pulled up on it, I can also say I'll accept the error of my ways (I may argue a little if I'm not proven straightaway, but ho-hum...! :D)

I agree that the S/N ratio has gone down of lateand the number of arguments has risen (which isn't doing the BR much good) and yes, it has to be said that the majority of potential for disagreements seem to be started from posts/questions/comments from the younger element, possibly thinking they know more than they do. Now that's probably gonna get me flamed, but no apologies - it's a fact that whilst age and maturity do not always mean proper experience, youth by definition is more likely to mean LESS (or in some cases very little at all) experience.

At the same time the younger elements can often have the characteristic over-confidence of youth, and can often be seen to be quoting something they heard in the coffee room (or under the outdoor smoking shelter :)) and re-quoting that as a hard fact.

This is NOT an attack on the sub-25 yr olds in general, as there are some here who've put the time in learned the trade properly, listened to the old heads (and respect them!) but the rubbish that's posted by the other, less knowledgable, teenagers at times is one of the things that makes me cringe sometimes. And what's worse is when they rise to the defence of their OP when errors are pointed out or an attempt is made to wriggle out of what they first posted.

Usualy I rely on Blue Room when I look for opinion on equipment I intend to buy, I have been with Blue room for something like 6 years. And It helped me a lot, (with a diferent ident. I lost password and mail) but this time I came to see a professional opinion on Robe700Spot, what do I find, a filosofical problem. Not positivly impressed!!!

Welcome back (I think?) but surely you must be aware that you are replying to a 5 year old topic?

What does your post add to the thread? Any more than the "philosophical" discussion you are unhappy with?

You may or may not be aware that the search function on the forum is less than perfect now, so you might not have got all the topics when you searched for Robe 700. If you do a Google search and append 'site:blue-room.org.uk' to the end, you'll probably have better luck.

It does seem odd you've complained about a post that at the time was so current it was clear nobody had had much chance to use them in anger - and as things get older, they're less of a talking point. I've had them in my rigs quite a few times, and they've been pretty reliable, spares have been quick arriving when needed and the feature set has done the trick. Quite a fe theatrical style LDs prefer them still to MACs - just because of the neat features that fit their requirements. If you want to a let a mod know your old username, we can easily reset your password so you can use your old account - where I guess you have lots of posts and a bit of history. We can still do this if you wish - no need for two accounts (which of course, is actually not allowed)

Best wishes

Paul
