kenlou Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Hi everybody, this is my first post. I'm writing from Italy, so sorry for all the errors I'll made writing in English ;) I'm here, looking for help about a very small Dj Booth that I'm creating in my home. The size (in meter) is 2,5x2,5x 2 high, a box... :( Well, I have all pro equipment (pioneer, Rane mixer, technics, ect) and I'm looking for a very good monitor I have some amletic doubt: Monitor Active or Passive and with Woofer of 6 or 8"?What do you think about? I'll really appreciate every suggestion :( I have seen the TANNOY V6/V8 and I would know if someone knows something about their sound and performance...Thanks in advance,Adriano
paulears Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I quite like Tannoys, but like Bose, they have a characteristic sound of their own, which you will either love or hate. Personally, I find them quite punchy, but a bit lacking at the bottom end (this relates to V8s) I'm not into DJ stuff - we mostly do theatre and live sound on here, we're not DJ specialists - but I wouldn't think they are quite what you're looking for at the bottom end without some kind of matching sub - and the tannoy subs are quite expensive. I have had experience of their stduio monitors too, DMT15s and their i12 and V15s used in higher power installs. The studio monitors sounded great, but the mixes were lacking in bottom end when listened to on other systems - the install speakers were tight and punchy - and all of them were bomb proof. Are you looking for a club sound or a studio sound?
kenlou Posted January 31, 2007 Author Posted January 31, 2007 Thanks Paulears :D I know this is not a Dj forum, but I have seen here a lot of professionists in sound/PA installation.I'm looking for a punchy but very clear sound :D , I'm looking for quality, wide frequency reponse, hi sensitivity (>90db) ans hi Spl (+/-115db). All that with hi qulality-clear sound.I have listen to JBL Control 1 - 5 - 28, and sounds good (the 1 better than 5, imho). But they are so old... Sorry if I write in this blog, however Sound is always Sound and in many Dj forum I have seen, people don't know what is professional or not... :D
paulears Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Don't worry - we spend ages argueing about what professional even means. I'm not sure that you can actually get what you want. High SPL very often means some kind of compromise. 115dB as a target listening level isn't that heathy. At that level, the extra quality from more esoteric loudspeaker systems may well not be audible. The JBLs may be an old design, but the truth is they have stood the test of time - which is a pretty good recommendation. Bottom end, as we've said, is the thing that most smaller cabs don't do well - so you might or might not want a bit extra at the bottom - depends on your music. Don't worry at all about sensitivity - if a speaker you fancy has good frequency response, and can give the output you want, then does it matter if you need a bigger amp to drive it? You did mention active speakers. Personally, in your situation, does it matter? It may come down to cost. Amp + 2 speakers vs 2 active speakers. I've always used separate amps, but I do't think I'd be too worrried if my next project used active cabs? Best advice is to go somewhere where you can demo the things - quite a few dealers have this kind of kit in stock. Try 'em out and pick the best you can afford that you like the sound of.
kenlou Posted January 31, 2007 Author Posted January 31, 2007 I've thinked about active monitor, but it seem to me that in the "6-8" woofer/150W" category there isn't the quality I'm looking for.I hate plastic cabinet and horn tweeter, so I have found an Italian small company that make something that seems to be quite good for me... take a look http://www.sr-tech.net/club1501.htm Cabinet n MDF.I'd like to follow your suggestion to go in local store and listen to loudspeakers but you have to know that here stores have only cheap monitor (behringer, next, etc...) . So I have to base my decision first of all on the tech specifications I found on web or catalog. So I really appreciate all yours words and your suggestions. Thanks :D
