Johnno
Our school's stage has a polished wooden board sloping upward forward of the proscenium, the full width of the stage. Would I be right in thinking that it's there to reflect sound towards the audience? If so, is there a technical term for it? If not, is it just decorative? John. Ken Coker
Its technical name is "wasteofspace" and its primary reason is, usually, to stuff up having a decent advanced bar/front truss position. I find that the sympathetic application of a saw normally improves matters. Ken
Johnno
Swift but brutal reply! We have a bar 10ft or so from the proscenium that's probably sufficient for our needs. Would one closer serve a different purpose?
Ken Coker
Well it really depends on what sort of shows you do. The further away and lower you go from the stage the more light spreads upstage - and thus you usually compensate by narrowing the beam angle of the instrument. I have a fondness for tight specials on the downstage edge of the stage - useful for those downstage mics and for lighting people while keeping off the projections ect - but this kind of angle can do odd things to facial features. AndrewR
to be fair it may well have an acoustic purpose! I work in a concert hall that unsurprisingly enough has lots of acoustically designed features in the auditorium. Its a pain in the proverbial because it has some big acoustic baffles that take up lots of room over the stage and play merry heck with flying big trusses! Without seeing it in place its hard to say if its doing anything. But if the space is designed to be used for unamped events it likely its there to help.
