Daveflyer Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 Hi, Ive found an oil projector for my band but Im not sure if it will be bright enough, I play in a band who play in medium to large pubs, we use 2 56par lights with 150watt bulds and a couple of aligator lights. The oil wheel I've found uses a "EFN 12-volt 75-watt" bulb, do you think this will be powerfull enough for a rock band with this setup to use? Any advice welcome. Cheers
musht Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 PAR 56 150W? guess you mean Par 38 Oil wheel afraid isn`t going to very bright, standard that they`re copied from was the Optikinetics Solar 250 http://www.optikinetics.co.uk/ Which is 250W 24V and still isnt very bright, the Solar 100 and similar Pluto, Project Liquidator etc are even dimmer. Liquid wheels are very fragile, TBH would ebay it, quite collectible and buy something brighter with proceeds.
Daveflyer Posted January 8, 2007 Author Posted January 8, 2007 Hey cheers theyre 56 PAR 300Watts sorry. Ive just found a new oil wheel which is a "Wild Tech Oil 250" bulb supplied is a "ELC A1/259 250w" do you think this might be a better option? The light will be used for small to medium pubs/clubs (50 - 250 people) at fairly short range.
musht Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Par 56 makes better sense,Thanks. Wild Tech appears in different flavours, according to Google: http://www.djkit.co.uk/acatalog/Wild_Tech_Oil_150_250.html ELC 250 lamps have in, IME, appalling lamp life and tend to pop if you sneeze in the same room, at about 5-7 quid a pop not that cheap to run. The CDM 150W version may not be lot brighter and lamp may be a lot more expensive, but would expect them to last a lot,lot longer than constantly replacing ELCs. MSD 250 version is probably quite bright but gets expensive for a one trick effect. Solar 250`s typically go on ebay for around 100 GBP plus accesories, at least you have some variety available with Solars. These brighter effects should be able to give you some use in a smaller club, just remember to keep the bit where the projector is pointing dark,i.e. use the PARs and alligators as back light and have the proj running front.
greenalien Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 I'd say you can't beat a Solar 250 with an oil wheel. Lamps last for ages and only cost a couple of quid to replace. Check out Optifanatics who are currently offering a deal on new Solar 250's. They are also a good deal second-hand - expect to pay around £100 - spare parts are readily available. These things have been around for ages so check age and condition before buying. If buying used, ensure the heat shield is present in the optical path and undamaged as these are expensive to replace. Definitely worth paying a bit more for quality, and you get a good choice of different coloured wheels. Be careful transporting these devices, the oil wheel is exposed and fragile!
