Just a slight change of subject here, but a valid point .... we're all looking at this topic as pro's in the industry,,,

but what about all the 'local' bands out there who only get paid a few quid for a performance, they don't even get minimum wage, yet there's hundreds, or even thousands of them out there, playing gigs every night, for a pittance.

Edit...

I voted I'd love to but........ (must learn to do more accurate quotes) :)

I think local bands are a different issue. I make my living from the industry but have in the past and probably will in the future play non-paying gigs with local bands. Just like am-dram, church choirs, amateur orchestras etc people play in local bands because they want to play and a lot of them aren't professional standard. I certainly wouldn't pay for my level of guitar playing.

I personally voted will be working my proper hours, like I do every day/week, because I don't believe working hours you are not getting paid to work is in any way fair. Most of the time I am perfectly willing to come in early or work later as a favour, but I will always expect to be paid for this and a bit of leeway when I need time off or whatever lets me know that my employer isn't taking the mickey.

Like most I have voted "Proper hours - what are they then?" as I would imagine an awful lot of us work on the basis of some days doing lots of hours and other days not coming in at all which end up (in theory) averaging out to 37 (or whatever) hours per week. If one day requires 12 or more hours (as Paulears is finding at the moment, for example) it's really difficult to say if any of those hours are "over and above" or will simply be compensated by time off once Panto season (or whatever it might be) is over and the venue goes dark for a week or so.

I realise some people have the luxury of enough staff and regular work to ensure everyone gets called for exactly their contracted hours each week and so overtime hours are really obvious, but for many of us that just wouldn't work.

Sadly, if a job has to go out the door - I have to help make sure that job goes out the door!

I like to call it involuntary flexi-time'!
