What problems to expect using line mixer as mic mixer

OK, so I know its silly but whatg would happen if:

I plugged 6 mics into a line mixer and then the output of the line mixer into a pre-amp?

The reason I ask is that I have a need to sub mix some mic signals prior to insersion into an AD converter (with pre-amp). (i.e. 4 toms into 1 AD chanel)

Out there at the moment are many 1u rackmoutn line mixers, but few cheap ones with mic preamps.

Thoughts? lots of noise? will it work?

What do people think of the ALTOLINK from ALTO or the MX882 from Behringer (apart from the usual "Its cheap and c**** comments, Im constrained by budget on this one)

Many thanks,

Insufficient gain, potentially unbalanced(?), no phantom power, potential noise from cranking up the o/p.....

If you have a healthy signal level from the tom mics, it might work, but I'd suggest it won't be as satisfactory a solution as a proper mic pre. It could work as an emergency fix, but I wouldn't go out and buy a line mixer to do this job.

Your suggestion of a low cost Behringer / Alto / Phonic etc. desk makes much more sense.

Oops, the 2 things I mentioned, the altolink and the mx882 are both line level mixers, but yes, I had thought of a small mixer... it just has to fit with all the other equipment and have 6 mic channels. Will investigate more.
