That's not the sort of thing you'll find in any of the gobo manufacturers' catalogues (Rosco, Gam, Apollo). The only options, in reality, are to either have a custom one made or to make one yourself out of printers' lithoplate.

As a matter of interest, have you called Rosco to ask whether they have any tooling from a previous custom run of a similar design that they could do you a couple of imprints of? Not sure whether this would be a go-er what with copyright considerations and all that jazz, but it has to be worth asking, doesn't it?!

I'm not sure if they'd be any cheaper, but you could alsways try Projected Image.

TBH, £49 doesn't sound like an unfair price.

Not wanting to tout for busines or anything, but I would be able to cut one for you from foil for a small donation. I have done quite a few before, and even one for another blue-roomer. Have a search through the threads as I posted quite a few Pictures of work I have done.

The foil will easily withstand the heat from a 16/30 Prelude, I use them quite often in a 1 KW Sil' without any problems. Let me know if you are interested...

That's very nice work Neil! Do you etch them?

Tommy, if for some reason Neil can't help you, have you thought about a SAV with a slide? Sometimes old technology can be very suitable :D

Loveing your work Neil, If its ok with you I will be getting intouch next time I need a custom gobo! I would rather my money go to you than pay rosco to mess up my orders!

Thanks for the comments. All of the gobos are cut by hand with a surgeons knife into a high grade foil (a bit thicker than Turkeyfoil) they usually take about 1/2 an hour to cut, although some things such as break-ups are generally a bit to fiddley I can cut most styles of text and most images. PM me if you ever need to.

Other methods for DIY gobos :

1) Use photo sensitive etch resist and thin copper or brass sheet - paint the back of the sheet with etch-resistant lacquer - most paints will do - Print the design onto OHP transparancy, tape onto sprayed copper and expose as per photoresist instructions, etch with Ferric Chloride PCB etching compound. This is just like making a printed circuit board, but without the insulated backing.

2) find your local laser cutting business and see if they can help...

Hire yourself either a Selecon Pacific, and print the gobo off your computer onto acetate, or a Rosco ImagePro (I think that's the correct name!) which will allow you to put an acetate into an SL or a Source 4.

Second vote for the Rosco ImagePro (clicky). They're ideal for this sort of thing.

You can get away with re-using the slides if you're careful, and they've not had too many hours.

If you use one in a Source 4 profile, make sure its lamped with a 575W bubble...

hi

Neil your work is amazing!!

one this that we have done a few time in college - because we are used to working with no budget- is o cut open an old coke can and use the aluminium form that (one it's been washed)

what do people think of this? the metal gets very hot but seems to last for the week or so of our show!
