Melanie
Hello, I'm Melanie and I study Multimedia at Nottingham Trent University. At the moment I am trying to research the use of multimedia in stage performances, specifically the use of projection. I am interested in where the future of multimedia performance lies, different ways of projecting and the problems that arise combining lighting with projection. I am trying to find people who are willing to be interviewed for this project because I am trying to make a short documentary on the subject as my final product for my course. It would be great if a few people here were willing to help me out and be my interviewees. I am willing to travel and should anyone be interested I'd discuss the questions with them beforehand or give them an indication of questions I will be asking. The duration of the interview would probably be 5 to 10 minutes. My deadline for the finished documentary is January 8th. If you can think of any multimedia performances that are showing during the next month that aren't too far away from Nottingham (London would be ok) that would be a great help too. I found a couple but I have missed them and the one I went to didn't really cover what I'm researching. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.Melanie
char-p
A very basic application of projection in a performance is being used in a performance of jack and the beanstalk by the 3D theatre company (Derby Deaf Drama) at the Rycote Centre in Derby on Sat 18th (Matinee and early evening) and Wed 22nd (early evening). This is a specific situation which requires further thought as the main importance of the performance is the Signing on-stage. If you'd like to know more, drop me an e-mail (find on profile page), or pop down and I'll talk you through the production. Paul
MarkPAman
Hi Melanie :) There is an old thread here that may help.
Fletch
Hi, I know the National Theatre do lots of projection stuff, seen a couple of plays there recently that used it very effectively. I believe they have a video dept, so perhaps worth getting hold of them somehow? Fletch
J Pearce
May also be worth speaking to the Derby Playhouse, I know they have used projection in their shows.I don't know if they are using any in their Christmas show, but if they are I will let you know on here. (I'm working the show)

(I'm working the show) Kit Lane is the video designer for this production. Melanie - if you want contact details for Kit, or details of some multimedia projection projects, then feel free to PM me... quinch
You may want to check out La Voix Humaine - an Opera North production which is touring at the moment (I think they're in Nottingham in a couple of days). There's quite a bit of projection on that and from what I've seen you could probably spend a whole thesis trying to interpret its meaning! Enjoy, quinch. leejones37
Hello, For a production heavily involving projection, I would have recommended going to see "Sunday in the Park with George" at the Wyndham Theatre, London. However, I believe its run finished in September. As it has already finished it probably isnt much use to you, but there may be information around regarding it, which you may be able to use.
PoppaDom
Indeed it has finished; Voyage Round My Father has been in there for a few months now! Poppadom
GRisdale
A shameless plug: On the 25th of this month Two Thirds Sky Dance Company are debuting at the Bowen West Theatre in Bedford with a dance double bill - the second part of which ("Svadebka") involves projection throughout (I'm working on it right now...) Involves interaction between video and stage performers and such, if that's the kind of thing you're looking for. Not too far away from you (closer than London anyway) and the theatre is 10 minutes walk from Bedford train station. The piece is also showing at The Place in London as part of Resolution! in January - too late for your deadline. I'm sure the choreographer and artistic director, Lisa Spackman, wouldn't mind being interviewed at some point - PM me if you want her contact details. She's a senior lecturer in dance at the University of Bedfordshire and has played with video a fair bit - she teaches on the degree course's New Media module. Another suggestion would be Helen Bailey (also a lecturer UOB) who has made several performance pieces involving video and new media (including toured work and installations). She is/was doing some research into 3D video for performance with some clever chaps from Manchester University. Again, drop me a PM if you want more details. Good luck with your project,Gareth. Melanie
Thank you so much. My project feels a bit more hopeful now. I was meant to have filmed my interviews by now according to my schedule. Luckily it's only a personal one so as long as I get everything done by January it doesn't really matter.I really appreciate your help.
