Fuses for zero 88's 2

Hi there,

Sorry for opening almost the same topic, but I still don't understand a thing. (wish it was only one...)

Our betapacks (betapack1) have 10A fuses 500Vac.

I've read the "fuses for zero 88's" topic and a Betapack 2 manual, but I coudn't see any voltage mentioned.

I thought this fuse obviously should be 250V 10A, but I have asked zero 88 and they said that the 500Vac one is the proper one. (My English is one of my weaknesses so didn't dare to ask further questions coz I din't want to have a long and complately insensible conversation on the phone.)

I just really would like to understand why.

If anyone could explain this or can offer a good book about this topic I'd be very grateful!

Thanks in advance!

Hi Welcome to the Blue Room!

It's quite simple, the 500V quoted refers to the MAXIMUM working voltage of that fuse, it is fairly irrelevant as long as it is at least rated as high as the supply voltage.

PS Your English is a lot better then some of the "English" speaking people who post on this board, don't worry about it!

I suspect this is because the Betapack can be wired for a single or three phase supply. You therefore ought to have a fuse which is rated for a phase to phase short circuit. This would be 415V here in the UK, and 380V for most of Europe - so a 500V rated fuse is correct.

Obviously, I'm completely ignoring the European voltage harmonisation.

Eviljohn2 asked one more good question which is on my list as well...

and I might be wrong but if I had a 10A 500V fuse in the unit and the dimmer is always running on single phase power (240V) this fuse would let through ~20A befor it gets blown. Am I right?

I still don't understand this fuse thing and especially the Zero 88 Betapack2 manual. It doesn't give me a straightforward answer or I just can't read it...

No, you are wrong.

A 10A fuse will open above 10A, regardless of the working voltage.

A 500V fuse is rated to break 500V - in other words, if you have a much higher voltage across it, it might not be able to open the circuit.

(Ignoring the strange things at ludicrous currents)
