ckaiserca
Howdy! My little theatre in Newmarket, ON has been asked to help out with donating some of our cast off sound equipment to the local SK8 Park. We are going to give them a small powered mixer and we also have the money in the budget the get them some nice speakers to go along with it to provide them with some decent sound. They want to be able to use the system for basic PA, but they also want the park users to be able to plug their MP3 players into it so that they can skate along with their choice of music. What would be the best way to make sure that they are not going to overdrive the channels that the MP3 player is plugged in to? The users would have no access to the mixer, they would only be able to adjust volume via their players. A Max volume would be set on the mixer. I was thinking of building a DI box (like a Behringer Ultra-DI DI20) into a project box and just setting the attenuation so that no matter how loud they turn up the volume on the MP3 they can't drive the channels into clipping. Better ideas? Thanks!
bruce
That won't actually limit the signal, it'll just mean that they have to crank the input gain a bit higher before distortion... I have a daughter that sk8s - I know how they'll act :P I'd suggest you really need a compressor/limiter on the input - there's a wee Behringer one that costs about twice as much as that DI (40 UK pounds) that may do the job. Why not just set the input gain so that, when fed with the loudest mp3 player that you can find at full volume, the output is below clipping. I can't see any reason to go with anything more complicated. Cheers James.
Simon MFR
Throw in a compressor. Done?
