Matt Riley
Conscious of the fact that so many roadies do indeed behave without great commonsense when lifting heavy stuff, the HSE have launched a new website. http://www.hse.gov.uk/betterbacks/index.htm. Its actually worth a look, and looks to be quite a decent site. BTW - I don't usually go browsing the HSE site! Its just that my Dad works as a H+S officer in a different industry and emailed me the link! Cheers, Matt
Simon Lewis
Matt, I'm surprised that no-one has commented on this website! OK, it's no worse than the type of advertising that graces the pages of the average H&S magazine, but it's pretty dire in places! The advice on handling aids ("Some of the most common are pallet trucks, trolleys, and conveyor belts") seems to have missed the very genre that the advice is aimed at.... It's worth reading just for the amusement factor! Simon
Seano
The advice isn't aimed at the entertainments industry (Like one little industry justifies a huge national billboard PR campaign, d'uh!). Its a spoof intended to reach a wider audience by being amusing in a "Spinal Tap" stylee, and its a pretty good effort by HSE standards too. many roadies do indeed behave without great commonsense when lifting heavy stuffI take issue with that. Care to back this outrageous accusation with some hard evidence? In my experience, touring rock and roll crews (which include - but are not exclusively made up of - "roadies") have excellent manual handling skills. I agree completely Seano, the ability to lift anything anywhere seems to be somthing we take for granted from members of the crew. And if they can't lift it safely, then they'll find another way around, though watching my FOH desk, racks, stacks, and A half dozen B2's disapear up a two storey metal fire escape in the capable hands of the Rockcity crew chaps at minehead (tent blew down so we had to move) was petty impressive. Not one chap even out of puff... apart from a well deserved tab.
drscab
Matt, I'm surprised that no-one has commented on this website!*snip*Simon I think shock and amazement at the website is a contributing factor to the lack of comments! I couldn't help but giggle incessantly at it, and my friend sat to the left of me was dumbstruck! She couldn't believe what she was seeing! Its as if they've decided that the roadie community is a bunch of 15 year olds. Does no one else feel insulted by this? Yes, the message conveyed is a good one, and is full of common sense, but someone really REALLY needs to be shot for those crimes against pun-age in the "blog"...
