Stairvile Dimmers

Few smaller venues that ive gig'd at have them. There basically OEM/re branded things, CPC have them as soundlab, chauvet do a version, erm yeh the list goes on!

They do what they say on the box, they dim, with 10a per channel and a 60a or so overall. I think you can set individual channels to a switch dimming curve. Not much else to say really... Oh, the LED's on the front are blue hehe.

Beware of the lectriflex connector on the back of these units (if you decide to buy the one with the cable/outlets pre-installed), they might be wired to a non UK standard (something Paulears) and others covered in another topic). I think thomman do soca panel connectors, your best bets to get two of them and sit nd solder the connectors yourself, depending on your ability.

How reliable are these? I was looking at a little set for a little portable dimmer for general use. These as the Showtec, Soundlab, Chervet etc seem to be very similar to the Strand Act 6s. Are these anywhere near as reliable and how simular are the internals and maintainance/repair features?

I would say it depends on how your going to use them.. If your planning on touring with them running big loads on them then maybe not. You get what you pay for..

One venue I LD at quite regularly at has a set of 6, they're used nearly ever weekend for some reason or another and have what you could call big loads on. They've had them for round 8 months, not a single problem yet. But thats about as good an idea on reliability as I can give you.

Maintenance wise, I guess their going to be solder jobs all round, no convenient inter-changable modules.

Just a general oem dimmer point

Strand, GLP, Oxo, all have dimmers made in the same factory in china.

Showtec used to have theirs made there but moved them to another company to lower cost.

Obviously not all strand dimmers are copied by other companies, but its interesting to note that the price of what is in effect the same product varies considerably depending on the brand name applied to it. In some instances this is justified by the inclusion of domestic software from the brand such as GLP who have personalised the software in all of the lighting desks from the same stable.
