Jamtastic3
Hi BR,Just wondering if any of you guys of the more DJ related industry have seen some of the new lights in action at Maplin. Most of them like the Vango and Swing look like modern versions of Geni's XTC and Wild Blazer. But I did notice they have an intelligent light: smart SSC-2. Anyone seen it in action yet? It doesn't say who it's made by http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?Module...NG&doy=4m11
ChrisD
Saw one down my local (maplins) in Slough. It looks like an Abstract VR series rip off but with the ugly LCD/7segment display thing on the front. It probably comes out of the same factory as Geni and for that price, I would expect the same build quality (which is sub-average). You could always pop into your local branch and ask to check it out. HTH Chris
tokm
I would expect the same build quality (which is sub-average). :) I'll have you know, none of my Geni kits never needed anything more than a re-lamping and a annual service (clean out insides and colour/gobo wheels etc) Which is more than I can say for other DJ kit like ACME or Chauvet or something. Some of the cheaper Geni kit might be sub-par, but I've never had too many problems and neither have other users I know. Course when you compare build quality of them next to Martin/Vari*lite, course their going to not be as good. So as I stay on topic with this post, they look more like some of the bits ive around by 'Funky Revolution' or Showtecs ultra cheap DJ kit... Also, with the 'smart SSC-2' expect an okish peformance from them if you link them up together, but under any control I expect they'll be very jittery and prone to doing random things because of the cheap DMX recievers. If your in the market for cheap and cheeful disco kit, both DMX'able and non, I would try Terralec LTD, I'm sure some people will nock them, but all in all, I've never had a problem with anything I've bought from them. spinmaster1
I apologise if this post seems a little off topic but just a few points to bear in mind. :) I have 2 Geni Mojo Scan 1's that I got from Maplin three years ago and they've been great lights for their price. The 'smart SSC-2' has 2 extra channels than the 'mojo scan 1's' which is a big plus for it's performance. Be careful when buying a scanner for this kind of price because they can have problems like noisy operation, non-smooth mirror motion, poor lamp holders (as I found out with mine when it cracked due to the heat). I'd mainly recommend these lights for DJ's, small parties, karaoke nights where the expectations for the lighting isn't very high. Also, I wouldn't recommend that DM-4 DMX controller from Maplin as the dip switches are very weak and broke on mine within a week of purchase. Conclusion: Great price for a '5-channel' scanner. Michael_hunt
Part of my would like to buy one, just to see what its like. But I've recently purchased a Martin SCX 500. Its just over double the price. But well worth I think. Im in the process of buying Vista PC (in the process means I need another £150). If your looking for a good scanner, with a good brand name, which looks great and works a treat, then I would buy a SCX 500. Also, the SCX 700 looks very good. Ok, so there the mania series. But come sunday, I will be tested how the handle a theatre show. Regards Mic
ian kirby
HI, hopefully I can throw some "light" on this for you. This is product is NOT made by geni This product is made in the same town in Taiwan that geni used to have thier factory, I have spoken with them regarding importing this light and I think they are a previous supplier to geni now having ago themselves (geni went bust in Taiwan and is now based in China) The product looks quite good mirror movement was good for such a cheap item, they do look like "my first disco light" in fact it looks like its been made by Tommy! toys.
