Jamtastic3
HI BR, I have 4 mirrorballs, (50 cm diameter) and at the moment the motors are 'chained' up on scaff poles using a chain put through some thick keyrings through the mirorball motor's screw holes. Now ideally I'd like something more safe and permenant so I was thinking of screwing the motor onto a square piece of wood and then drilling a hole in the centre for a doughty half coupler. Would this be suitable? Cheers
GridGirl
That's what I've always done, and never had any problems with it!
StevieR
Same for me - although I would generally just go with a standard hook clamp as its a little less expensive than a half-coupler. I have yet to see a motor for these with any decent fixings. You would thing someone would have thought this one through by now... Steve
slipstream
I thought I was the only one to look at a 1m dia mirror ball and wonder about the split ring between the motor and ball, and the assorted connection methods onto the rotator and take one step to the left. jayselway
On some of the newer ones, there is a plate fixed to the motor casing, which has a nice 10mm hole in it. I've normally unscrewed this, and affixed a bolt through the hole, onto a hook clamp. I did use huge washers on both sides, with Nylock nuts, though. I have a similar question though: In the club I service, boss man called in someone else to install 5 mirror balls in the centre of the main staircase. These were just with simple steel cable and clamps. However, they had no safety bonds, and as such, were promptly pulled down and broken by the locals. The balls themselves have an extra eye for a safety, however, the motors do not. Having been notified of this, the other installer simply put the cable through the keyring AND the extra eye, therefore making the balls off centre. It's not my gig, but made me think - if the motor has no rotating safety hook, and the hole in the shaft is only suitable for a keyring-like fixing, then how do you safety such an item? *thinks* maybe this should be in the safety section..... Jay Moderation: We agree it should be moved, however disagree on where to, hence moved to Staging and Rigging.

Mikey
As Kev said above, The new Halls gadget is a really good invention. I did think it was perhaps slightly over engineered as the mirror ball was saftied with a pair of half ton shackles! :) Mikey.

Chas at Halls
(Polite cough from side) Hope this isn't direct advertising, but these mirrorball safety rotators are new to the catalogue and we don't have a data sheet or webpage together yet. (Please have a look at the new website - www.hallstage.com- full of good downloads & info) Contact us directly for all widget update info- info@hallstage.com CH
hughesy
[I'm afraid that there's not a great deal one can do to protect against d**k-heads who are itent on yanking down kit that's within reach!! I have a policy of not hanging anything within reach of the aforementioned persons unless my (or the clients) RA deems in appropriate and safe. If there was a risk that something could be pulled down then it should not be hung there in the first place. Would members not agree???
