Johnno
Is it OK to use insulated crimp terminals inside a lantern (for earth wires) or would they crumble in the heat? I'm only asking 'cos (1) I'll have to go to the shop to get uninsulated ones, and (2) my insulated-crimp tool is much nicer to use than my uninsulated-crimp tool <_<
Brian
Depends on the lantern. In something which runs hot like smaller 650W fresnels then they will harden and crumble. In a PAR can you'll get away with it.
Oovis
Does crumbling matter for a purely earth connection?
Johnno
Does crumbling matter for a purely earth connection? "Crumbling" was more a figure-of-speech than anything. Are they likely to be rated for the temperature they are likely to encounter and does it matter if they're not? I'm getting some uninsulated ones tomorrow so it's now become a question of general interest rather than a quest for specific advice. BTW the lanterns in question are mostly 1kW profiles and fresnels.
niclights
It is my understanding that there is a temperature ceiling for these sort of insulators. However I see no problem in using them (though probably unnecessary) - depending on how well heat can escape they may become brown and brittle over time. Baldrick
Why not carefully remove the plastic with a Stanley knife after crimping? Better than having it melting/burning.
robloxley
Why not carefully remove the plastic with a Stanley knife after crimping? Better than having it melting/burning.Because at that point you may as well buy an uninsulated-crimp tool and crimps. Also, cutting the hard plastic off is more of a faff than it sounds. Dave
I think CCT minuettes use uninsulated crimps on their earth wires, but Strand Preludes use insulated ones. These do show signs of heat, but I don't think I've ever seen a melted one.
Neil Frazer
Personally I would use uninsulated for the earth inside a lantern. If you want to use Insulated These are rated up to 105 degrees.
