JMC
Was this from Strand directly? Still no updated info on the website (screenshots even show the old software). Any chance you could post them/email them?

gareth
Certainly looks interesting! Nice to see they've ditched that stupid light-coloured front panel from the smaller Palettes and gone for a nice dark grey. Wonder when we'll see a working version in the UK for demo purposes? Grahame
Shame they've ditched the trackball in favour of a trackpad - I hope you're not expected to use that to pan & tilt the movers! And what exactly is 'sneakernet' supposed to be? Some "cool" American euphemism for ethernet? Yecch!
Tom Baldwin
And what exactly is 'sneakernet' supposed to be? "Sneakernet" originally referred to floppy disks - the point being, files were transferred by someone walking from A to B - i.e. using their sneakers, instead of a proper network. In this case, it refers to USB memory sticks, rather than floppies, but the principle's the same. Rather worrying that on a 2 page spec sheet, they had room to talk about a free USB stick, rather than desk features.
tokm
67511 50 Channel Software Expansion Kit(300/500/Palette)67512 200 Channel Software Expansion Kit(300/500/Palette)67513 500 Channel Software Expansion Kit(300/500/Palette)Was hoping Strand would give up with that sneaky money making tactic with the Pallete's! :D Though, with the basic version being at 3000 channels, it doesn't make it quite so bad.. All in all, glad to see the colours been changed to something a bit more theatre'esk! Looks good though. Anyone thinking it'll be a wait till ABTT till we see one? Or is it going to be a Strand Rep bringing one around places kinda job? Tom
henny
what old strand desk have they nicked the button design from ???? good to see them using somthing with a real clunk, better than the rubber ones they put on the 300 that are verry easy to miss press when typeing at speed. gareth
Button-wise, they look like the keycaps from the old Lightboard M. Not sure that's really a good idea. And further to a point in an earlier post - trackpad - UGH! I didn't spot that on my first cursory glance, but now that I have spotted it I really really hope it's not intended as the primary method of pan/tilt control of moving lights. heffie512
I just came from LDI. (LDI is North America's PLASA) They had to new pallets working there (they just finished the software Friday before the show opened.) It feels very solid. It is very strand like, but with smart features that will make your jaw drop. (because of the strandified horizon OS) Like a color picker for moving lights including swatch books from rosco, lee, gam...Lamp pan & tilt is not in %, it is in degrees the effect engine is way different and easier to use (with real effects) Yes there is a track pad, but it is for navigating the screens (which were touch screens!) But for Pan & Tilt there are 4 knobs above the keypads, though I would not be suprised if you could use it some way for pan/tilt The buttons are the same at etc express (which I personally don't like but I know I will get over) New remote software too (you might have to buy their remote...) There are still some things for them to work out. There rumour of delivery is Jan 2007 for North America... though it is a rumour, no one at the strand / genulite booth could say exactly. heff

Biiiiiiig mistake. :D The buttons are the same at etc express (which I personally don't like but I know I will get over)Again, a mistake IMO - the type of keypad buttons used on the newer 500-series (not the flatter, less responsive ones from the old 500s) are the best kind for a lighting desk. But at least they aren't the god-awful Schadow buttons as used on the Pearl and Expression ...
obsoperator
It occurs to me that one advantage (** laughs out loud **) of Win XP is that it may be relatively simple to attach an outboard trackball and have it "detected" as the "pointing device." If Genlyte is smart, they will make this an "authorized" alteration.
gareth
But one of the disadvantages of the 300-series was the need to use an external trackball due to the lack of a built-in one - building this fault into the new desks can't be a clever thing to do, surely? Tomo
Surely the biggest reason why a trackpad is utterly idiotic is that the Palette is said to have a "point and click interface".With a trackpad.
