daveh
Totally subjective I know but any veiws/ preferences on C900M's or SM86's for a softish female jazz vox application. I'm not taking my KM84's out of the studio so I need a couple of reasonable condensors. Specs for both look OK.Cheers
ghance
hi I've had some cracking gig with SM86. its my current vocal mic of preference for cabaret and world music if the artist is softly voiced. (camile, paulo flores, habib koite etc). its sensitive without being overly hard like an beta87a and warm(ish) without the plumpness of a beta58. I've only used the AKG a couple of times, and personally found it a touch too clinical - a bit like the beta87a can be with some voices. recommend trying the SM86.. but also think the sennheiser e865 and 945 are worth a go if the artists is on the quiet side. let us know how you get on .spike
StevieR
The Sennheiser E865 is a gorgeous mic. I was very impressed when we got them in for the first time. Demo'd it with a customer during a live 'cabaret' style gig with a wide range of vocal styles and everything sounded sweet. Well worth investing in and a bit cheaper than the SM86. Matt Riley
I'm with Steve on the 865 being a great mic - really easy to get a great sound out of, and rather good price as well. The only other live condensor vocal mic which I've had occasion to use is the Neumann Kms105 and, while being a very clear mic, can be tempermental compared to the other ones - having said that many are willing to pay this price for the sheer quality of the mic. It would certainly be worth a look. Cheers James.
Bobbsy
Mentions of Audix reminds me that, although you specifically said you wanted a condensor mic, you might try an Audix OM6 dynamic. I've used this mic with great success a number of times in exactly the sort of application you describe. The OM6 can sound very nice indeed on a female voice, and is great at feedback rejection, allowing you to pull a soft voice out of the mire. A second "long shot" you may wish to try might be the Rode S1 condensor. The S1 has a rather distinctive, slightly bright, sound that seems to work extremely well on some voices and not be good at all on others. I wouldn't buy without a demo, but on the right voice it can be very good. The other advantage is that it's the first mic I've owned (condensor or otherwise) that might be even more solidly built than an SM58! I'm sure I could drive nails with it and still get good sound!
