ghance
hi, I'm looking for a professional DVD player: .rack mountable.Switch off all OSD messages (Play, stop, open etc).wired remote start and (this is the tricky bit) .plays DVD-A format discs. normally I'd just go for the Pioneer V8000.. right kind of money & spec.. BUT it doesn't play DVD-A. I need to get at 6-channels of audio for some surround-sound art installs where the audio comes off a DVD being used like a 6-track multi-track player. the pioneer V8000 has a digital audio out.. but I don't think the player reads DVD-A format. And even if it did, I'm not sure how I'd get the digital converted into 6 channels of analogue easily. any ideas? many thanks .spike
ghance
the silence is deafening.. does that mean that you guys haven't come across pro dvd players that do DVD-A?? I read about an expensive looking lexicon RT10. any know these units any others?
dbuckley
I'd never heard of DVD-A 'till I saw this posting, but Wikipedia has set me straight on that one. As well as another meaning for DVDA... Are you willing to work with alternative technologies? First port of call would probably be Alcorn McBride. Too rich and/or heavy? How about a hard disk recorder with lots of outputs enough outputs (eg Alesis HD24 or Korg D888), and a digital video recorder (eg the nNovia A2D) timecoded together? How synchronised does the audio have to be? If it's a typical museum or exhibit space peice which isn't proper surround but multiple stero or mono sources then you could use a PC running PCStage, with dual head video card and multiple sound cards... ghance
thanks for yr post.. we use DVD-Audio for a surround-sound outdoor performance. 2 x 6-ch DVD's are mixed live to a firework display. so the audio has to be totally synchronised. the show also tours world-wide so flight weight, ruggedness and local availability are important factors. yes. we looked at different technologies when designing the show. ADAT. HD, Protools.. etc but all things considered we like DVD-A as its stable and cheap. we currently use Pioneer 757's which are very cheap, reliable and available on 5 continents. could use laptops, but we're concerned about the travel hazards of laptops and the potential of crapping out at a critical moment. but I need to buy some pro DVD players for our hire stock. ideally something like the pioneer V8000 but with the ability to play DVD-A as well so we can use it on the surround sound shows. cheers
