Gazlights
Hi Guys and Gals! Long time no read! Hope everyone is fine and dandy.... I've had a search through previous topics and surprisingly I cant find anything about gels! I'm just about to start my first professional (paid :D ) job working as a lighting tech over in the US of A..... My question is regarding lighting gels....now I've had the opportunity to have a play about with different combinations of gels whilst at college and I found some colours I really like...L58, L106, L124, L134 etc etc.....in the past I've spent ages trying to create different colours and interesting colour combinations by colour mixing and stacking gels etc....but I've noticed some really nice colours around recently, my swatch book must be well out of date!! What are your favourite gels/combinations? can you suggest any for me to check out over the next few weeks that may be usefull to me working in a primarily theatre with some cabaret acts? obviously I'm going to be looking at lots of things over the coming months but hopefully it may speed the process up with a few suggestions! I guess I'm bored of lighting people with Straw/Lavender and I'm looking to find some different ideas!
GridGirl
For a dark/evil/whatever look, I love 181 and 113. Used it for Carabosse on a production of Sleeping Beauty (the ballet version) and it worked really well.
Steve Cavill
181 has to be my favourite!
peteransom
I like L120 (while it lasts!) but have just (re)discovered open white, which can work well if used right. I lit a show not so long ago that only had one gelled lantern, even then I think that was L205 or similar. Just keep the levels down (35% or less) to get a nice warm soft light. The classic three colour mix Red-Amber-Blue gives a good variety of 'mixed' colours but I generally throw in a few other saturated colours to add a bit of interest e.g. L106, L158, L195, L128, L126. I like to keep the face light neutral e.g. L205, L162, L152, L013, L194, L201. It just depends on the mood of the gig.
Guest lightnix
FWIW there are some interesting previous discussions on this subject here and here. Hope that helps.
