Hiring a P.A in Cambridgeshire

I am looking for gear to mix a few bands (one is quite a large funk band) for a village festival in Cambridge.

I will need:

Mixer (to mix drums, many vox, keys, guitars and brass)

Amps

Speakers (subs aswell)

Monitors

a cross over

EQ's Compressors etc.

and a big stage snake.

Stage Electrics is way beyond our budget as this is a charity event.

Does any one know a cheapish company that will hire, deliver and supply technician (though not essential) in/to Cambridge.

The event is 9th September

Cheers

I've heard of Terry Jones who's based in Cambridge. Was on Fen Road in Chesterton last I heard (which was a fair few years ago, when I was about 14 and the school I was at needed to borrow some cables) :P

I read somewhere, either on here or the KV2 website, that he has the KV2 VHD in his hire stock. so would certainly have a big enough system. Don't know much more I'm afraid. you should be able to get the number off of directory enquires

Pearce Hire in Peterborough - they do quite a lot in Cambridge - they were doing the sound at the small fair on Parkers Piece last weekend. Don't know how much they charge (when I used to do work for them, many years ago, they were competitive - and I'm sure they still are).

Also, if it is out doors they have loads of experience in this.

Have you thought about getting in touch with the organisers of Strawberry Fair; they seem to have quite a few systems on the go there and may be able to point you toward a 'sympathetic' local supplier.

See, I was going to Second Brian's suggestion of Stewart Newlands. Nice guy, worked with him before.

Its always worth being a little cheeky, and asking companies if they do discounts for charity events. If the event is for a registered charity, you would stand a greater chance, but even if not, it is worth asking, as for a company to have equipment sitting in their warehouse, there isn't any income, so if they won't be hiring it out elsewhere, they may be willing to bring something in for it, even if its less than their list. This is more difficult if you're trying to get an engineer as well, but if it's just for the kit, try ringing around to see if anyone can do you a deal to help. You can also offer a piece of advertising space for them, either in a programme or on a banner to tempt them.

Reminds me, my boss said the other day, "charity job, quote them double!" - I'm pretty sure he was joking, please feel free to call for a competitive and charity minded quote :P

I've been in contact with a company called 'AudioRent

Has anyone come across them before, any good?

I haven't worked with them, they may be good they may not. Their equipment as listed on their website though is completely insufficient for the task at hand. It's pushing it for 200 inside, never mind 500 outside. They may be cheap and it may be for 'charidee' but there's doing it for low cost and there's doing it badly. I fear you might be disappointed with the results.

As for the comment of SeanT, about charging charities double I can kind of see where the logic comes from, because unfortunately there is a something-for-nothing mentality that goes hand in hand, so yes quoting a discounted price often ends up being pressed for more discount. I'm perfectly happy to do a job for 0 profit, in fact a lot of what I do is 0 profit or barely more, but to expect me (or anyone) to make a loss on a job is unreasonable.

Sorry, agree that a company won't make a loss on an event unless they view it as a donation to that charity, but a company is likely to be willing to earn less than they would if their equipment is just sitting around, as otherwise they wouldn't be earning anything. I know what sean means tho, did quote a bit more recently, than I would for an event on the basis I knew from previous experience they were going to ask for a discoun of about 30%, which they did, and I was able to go lower than normal price, but manage not to make a loss, and not seem to be saying no to a charity. :P

Regarding Audiorent, I've never heard of them, but...

Alarm bells ring in my mind when I read their mic list, which consists of:

Yoga DM3306 Professional Microphones

Electro Vision UDM-920 Professional Microphones

Not exactly the most comprehensive list I've seen.

I scratched my head for a few minutes, trying to visualise an EV mic of this description....

Then the penny dropped.....

Electrovision, not Electrovoice ;-)

The web site has cheered me up immensely !
