slim_mcslim Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 I need to create tempory raked seating for an event in November. My plan mainly involve's 2m x 1m pieces of staging, handrails etc... Does anybody know who would have 56 or so 2m x 1m decks, preferably up north somewhere.... Or indeed anybody have a better plan on how to do it!!! Paul...
Bryson Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 You know, I read that as "Naked Audience Seating" so I'm a little dissappointed. :P However, to address your real question: I recently hired 60 2mx1m pieces of Metrodeck from Stage Electrics in Newcastle. They need a bit of notice, but they have that kind of quantity. Depends how far north you mean, I suppose.
swissg Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 There's a company in hull called tega and they have a very good stock of legs and staging. there number is 01482 831031 ask for tony hope this helps SG

Yeah, I'd assume in that kind of quantity they'd be coming up from the Bristol warehouse, so a fair bit of notice...
andy_s Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 You know, I read that as "Naked Audience Seating" so I'm a little dissappointed. :P OFF TOPIC (I suppose) I was once working at a theatre where we were expecting a touring production of "Steaming" (well known play from the eighties set in a turkish baths with a cast of semi naked (and indeed naked at one point) women. Marketing had a great idea - lets advertise a naturists matinee so the audience could choose to sit and watch as nature intended - much discusion ensued - how to seperate clothed and unclothed areas, how to advertise to the required audience (answer- buy copy of H&E and do mail out to all societies listed in the back pages), what to put on the theatre seats ( upholstered in that lovely hardwearing fabric that's not comfortable on bare skin), would the board op be prepared to lead the way....etc etc. the show got pulled (just the matinee, not the week's run), after some negative press perhaps disproving the "No publicity is bad Publicity" theory. even got to appear on theradio - BBC sent their reporter round for vox pops when there were no punters in the theatre, so the staff all had to be interviewed pretending to be theatre-goers. But as for the seating rake, well it was built in at that particular venue, so I can't help the OP with a source of decks.
robloxley Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 Or indeed anybody have a better plan on how to do it!!!It'd be worth getting a quote from someone like Arena Seating.
Roderick Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 I would very strongly suggest you contract a specialist to build this structure for you. When you start building seating platform a whole lot of other regs come into play such as:- Seating (see thread in the safety forum)- Handrails- Aisle lighting- EgressAnd you would most certainly want a engineer to sign-off on the structure before allowing the public on it. There was a very ugly incident a few years ago in Sydney where a temporary grandstand collapsed. There were a few things that led to the collapse but the main reason was that the weight distribution was uneven with more people sitting on one side than the other. Also the movement created by people walking up (or down) the structure puts extra forces in place. From the number of decks you need I assume you want to seat about 200 people, you need to incorporate that weight into point load calculations. Get an expert, it is worth the money.
Jivemaster Posted July 22, 2006 Posted July 22, 2006 There was a collapse of temp tiered seating in London a few years ago. I dont think that a mountain of decking constitutes safe raked seating. Really a competent raked seating supplier is a necessary supplier. There's static and dynamic loading to consider and all the regs for spacing and access and disabled access dimensions to consider. Oh! what are you going to stand it on, will it take the point and distributed loads. MInimise the hazards, minimist their risks, then insure the rest. Does your insurance cover you to do this?
