djwiltsh Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 Hi All This is my first post on here (hopefully of many!) so I will introduce myself briefly. I'm Dan, I work in IT but do some lighting on the side, mainly at church. We have a bullfrog, loads of par cans, a few profiles etc, 3 MAC 250s and 2 MAC 300s. My question is this: The MAC 250s have a gobo shake feature, which I have never found a use for. In what situations have you guys used it / would use it? Thanks Dan
AndyJones Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 I think I have only ever used it once. I had a gobo wash with 8 or so macs, I then used gobo shake to make random shakes. I have also used a chase with a light snapping on, with a gobo shake and snapping off. I only think they have appeal to rock and roll, even then there is not much I have been able to do with it. Why don't you have a play see what you can get? then come back and tel us  oh, yea, welcome to the BlueRoom! AndyJones
davidlighting Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 Dave, HereI use the shake on my moving lights for when you are doing beam effects in the smoke projecting in to the air it look-es really effective
Jamtastic3 Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 The shake effect looks good for example with drum n bass music, the music is so jittery and hyped up that having a fast pan and tilt with a shaking gobo looks great and blends with the music well. It's the same for live metal bands when doing say a drum solo or a fast guitar instrumental - get those lights shaking for extra effect!
marky Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 Never use it!! Of course lighting is all about preference, but I think it looks just about as tacky as you can get!
johnhuson Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 I'm another one who has never used it and think it looks tacky....but then it's all about personal preference.
GridGirl Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 You can add me to the "never used it" list - it makes me feel vaguely sick if I look at it! I can see that in a fast moving pan&tilt chase it could be effective though.
Pete Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 Someone mentioned to me that they used it when doing Jack and the beanstalk, with a breakup for the "fe-fi-fo-fum" moments,
niclights Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 Add me to the 'tacky' list too. Never understood the reason for it. Always hated it. Great first post Sir!
soundo26 Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 not much use for it in theatre I guess, but in corporate it can be handy when flying clients' Logos round the room to come to rest emphatically on the set!
Ken Coker Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 It's great at the end of "Hedda Gabler", just before she shoots herself. Directors love it! Ken
P. Funk Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 I found my first use for it the other day - had 4 mac250+s projecting onto the white ceiling of a function room (in their nice pink and white glass gobo) to create a nice effect whilst a band were on - gobo shake livened it up a bit. Hard to explain but looked really cool (especially if you slightly offset the gobo shake on each head) http://www.whogivesatoss.com/ceilingwibble.jpg
WiLL Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 So we have it. Gobo shake is the lighting designers equivalent of marmite. You either love it or hate it.
