hi,

does anyone have any details on the remote wiring for the Skytronic Skytec 700w mini fogger and is it possible to extend this using 3 pin XLR cable?

Thanks in advance

edited to put proper cable name in...damned fingers!

What the hell is XRL cable? Have I been saying it wrong? I mean I know I'm a lampie and an SM by trade but hell, the way I say it sounds way cooler.

Whether you can extend the remote cable with XLR will depend on how many cores there are in the cable - two and you're OK, three or more and it's no good! How does the remote plug into the unit? The big Martin smoke machines have XLR output from the remote, so given that they're a bit more complex than your fogger, you probably can do it. Sorry I can't be of any more help!

Beware, if the remote passes anything remotely considered to be more than "low voltage" you should not be using an XLR... IE if it has mains voltages an XLR is not appropriate.

What connector does the machine use currently?

More usefully:

According to the manual I found (for the 1000W model unfortunately), it uses a 5-pin XLR cable - so you couldn't use 3-pin XLR.

However, it may be incorrect for the smaller model.

On the subject of XLR-3 connectors:

You can get XLR-3 connectors rated at 250 V ac, which would be theoretically suitable for mains-level signal voltages (assuming the right cable).

There are also XLR-3 connectors rated at 125 V ac, which would NOT be suitable.

All that said, I'd advise against sending anything higher than extra-low voltage (50 V ac or 120 V dc) down XLR anyway, due to the easy availability of male-male gender-benders which would put potentially hazardous voltages on exposed pins.

I have worked with birdie lights and these are low voltage and use XLR to power them I think they are 12V

...wiring for the Skytronic Skytec 700w mini fogger and is it...

Just to confirm this is the smoke machine your on about >> http://www.skytronic.co.uk/product/product.php?s=160.428

If that is so, then yes you can use XLR cables to extend your remote. The voltage is around 12v with a very very low ampage (ive measured it :P ) Spose common sense dictates that you don't some how try to use two off one remote.. with say an XLR splitter or something.

Just because it is a higher than normal current running down an XLR, id suggest you knock up sum XLR cables with some 3 core mains flex for use over say 10m.. Just my advice, don't take it as gospel.

Thanks Tom,

yup - that's the machine. I'll look at knocking up an extension cable. As for 12v being higher than usual, it's not uncommon for XLR cables to run +48v to provide phantom power for condenser mics so it should be able to handle the low ampage 12v no problems.

Thanks for all the help.

Oh yeah, oops. Forgot about noise boys phantom power down XLR :( ! Was just comparing against normal mic & DMX signals down XLR. I still stick by my recomendation of using perhaps some thicker flex, just thinking about voltage drop and all that.
