Getting a credit acount

This may sound stupid but here goes.

Most of the companies I use I buy direct using my credit card card but there is one that I wish to open a credit account to get better prices. Now on there credit application form it states the requirement of 2 trade account references. If this is your 1st trade account - how will you have 2 trade credit account references!?

Chicken & egg!! senario - sort of.!

Any advice appreciated

Speak to the company concerned, if you have a good payment history with them up to now, and explain the situation, they may be fine.

The normal thing is to get your mates/relatives who are also in business to write references for you.

Provided that you don't have the slightest intention of mucking about with the payments, I never think that this matters.

Of course, if it's a small company you're dealing with then talking to them honestly is better - if it's a big place with strict procedures administered by robotic staff, then the former approach is more likely to be necessary.

most companies in my experience are fine if you have a purchase history with them, if you dont already buy some stuff and whilst doing so mentoin you want to open an account! - thats what has worked for me anyway!!

Your bank should happily provide a reference, as long as you've been a good customer. Your accountant may be able to provide another; or any supplier of goods or services, with whom you have a good trading record.

Check with their accounts department as to what kind of references they will accept; you may be pleasantly surprised :)

Sadly, good trading records alone are not always enough these days, unless they go back several years. In fact, one of our own suppliers gave us a name to look out for last year. This guy had been to a number of lighting / electrical suppliers over a period of a few months and in each case had bought about £2k of goods with cash, cheques or credit cards and everything had been fine. Then he went around all of them asking for 30 days on £4-5k of gear, saying it was for a big project and he was having to front some of the costs himself - could they please help him out just this once.

They all agreed, he got the stuff... and disappeared overseas with it.

I must admit I thought it would be harder to get accounts that it has been in some cases. But some places are really hard to get them from. I have found that getting a good payment record with one key supplier that has given you a good sized limit has help me to gain accounts with key suppliers.

As Lightnix says, your bank should (assuming you've been good) provide you with a reference. There's no harm in asking them. And also make sure that you ask the others you want to use as referees.

Slightly :), one of my colleagues was buying a load of building materials - sand, cement, paving slabs etc - from B&Q warehouse. They were going to charge him a substantial delivery charge.

He asked the guy at the counter if there was any way to reduce the charge?

"Yes, open a trade account. That way you get free delivery, and 30 days credit."

"What references do I need?" he asked?

"Just print us off a letterhead".....
