mac.calder
Whilst I love Apple Mac's and despise Windows - for lighting design I would have to say Windows. Or a Mac with a virtualPC. HOWEVER - If you do not want to do CAD work, do not want to use OLE's etc etc etc... Go for a Mac.
Nick S
The new Intel based macs can run Windows out of the box, which is another way round if you prefer the Apple hardware. The most popular Mac alternative I can think of would be VectorWorks - my work loans me a copy of VectorWorks Designer, which I can put a reasonable word in for. For CAD, no complaints, and it's a half decent package for most theatrical lighting design and plotting work. It appears to be more of a standard in the USA. Obviously it's a CAD package first, with the lighting kind of bolted on, but at least the new version (v12) integrates the two a lot more. It did have a bit of a steep learning curve, and the library is (as one would expect) pretty US-centric. It's no replacement for WYSIWYG if you need to pre-vis, and you'll need to buy some extra software (ESP Vision) to interface with VectorWorks for that kind of thing...which you need Windows for, which defeats the point anyway B-)
Brian
Zak, you posted the same question yesterday here. If the topic you were given the link to doesn't answer your question then please add to that topic.
