Crudge
my sister is a dancer, but is doing a dissertation on "Technical Advances in the theatre, over the last ** years. " basically from like the 60s to now, all the automation, flying safty etc improvements, and if they mean the actors have to work harder or, if the technology helps the actors perform. she need to find 5 books that she can put on he bibliography. so had anyone any ideas for books to read that would be relivant to this topic? cheers
TeeJay
Have a look for these terms: WIKIFAQSEARCH This question has been asked several times on every theatre forum. The answers are, for the most part, the same. When it says " ...5 books to put in her bibliography...", my first thought was only 5 books???? To be able to include them, she should have read them and be able to refer to them within and throughout her dissertation. What's the focus? Is it technical advances that impact on dancing? Advances that alter how departments work in live industry? However, it's nice to see a chance for someone to do some cross discipline research - I know I don't study dance, acting techniques or directing methods as much as I perhaps should. It would be interesting to read her final piece
Crudge
I can post it after she does it. it doesnt have anything to do with dance, its purely technical, though it would have comments on any implecations they make on a performer. yeah the books are just for titles so we can go out and buy them or get them from a library. Simon Lewis
she need to find 5 books that she can put on he bibliography(sic) Although you do not state what level your sister is studying at, the term "dissertation" implies it's at a higher level than school? If so, why rely on a bibliography? Such use may be legitimate (as implied here) but it is all too easy for the less scrupulous to list the first five books they found in an online catalogue, and then cut and paste in some article on the subject of interest. It's good academic discipline to reference work that has been studied (and quoted!), and to use a recognised system for this (Numeric or Harvard). Nothing personal - I just hope this might be of use! Crudge
yeah I know all that, I studied my Degree in theatre. yeah she is doing a Dance degree in London. And saying bibliography I was meaning she could use 5 books that related to the issue in order for her to strt reading and researching. That would later end up on the bib. James S
This may help: Entertainment Technology Books The "Theatre History" page may well be most helpful especially Yesterday's Lights - A revolution reported" Looking at the Strand Archive may also be worthwhile. Best of all would be to speak to someone who has been there to see the changes take place

James S
No problem She may be interested (or rather: find it useful to) in going to the Association of British Theatre Technicians (ABTT) show later in June and talking to people there.
