Help!

Recommended Posts

I am so very new to all this! my name is Gemma and I have just walked out of school. I am known to be a fast learner and particularly intelligent. I have just been employed as a publicist for a sound and lighting company and while I'm very good at my job... it is suggested that I pick up the skills of noise boys and lampies so I can improve both my work and the prospects of offering more technicians... please can I have as much help with all the basics as possible as I feel a bit overwhelmed being thrown in at the deep end!

a quiet plea which will be appreciated if you could reply!

thanks! <_<

Hi Gemma and welcome to the Blue Room.

Why not have a look around our new and shiny Wiki where you will find many of the technical terms used in this industry defined.

Also, have a look in the FAQs pinned in the top of most forum (eg lighting, sound etc) where there are often links to the more popular questions which get asked here. eg 'How Do I Light a Rock Concert'.

Other than that, have a nose around, lurk and ask questions.

Here's a suggestion , if you work for a sound and light company , could you not attend gigs and events with them , help them unload the kit from the truck , move the boxes into the venue , unpack , and help set up the kit. I am sure someone will show you how to put a microphone stand up and put a mic and a cable on it.

Alternatively go to your local music venue and ask if you can be ' a slave ' for a few gigs so you can get a idea of what goes on. Make sure you can get there at two or four in the afternoon , whenever the front of house guy arrives , just before the band load in.

If you do a few nights for a couple of weeks you should soon grasp the concepts of what all the equipment does.

Dont expect to be allowed to play with the sound desk until you have done this for a couple of months, ( well they may let you turn up the fader on the channels that the CD player is patched into ).

Dont forget to go for coffee and/or go to the bar , you could even maybe buy the engineers a beer.

Hope this helps.
