helen_g
I'm doing a project on Mirco dets, used for bullet hits in theatre. Can someone explain to me how the Micro det itself actually works? I've tried to find out on the internet, I've found out how to use them, but not how they work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. p.k.roberts
Can someone explain to me how the Micro det itself actually works? Obviously hugely over-simplified, but in brief, they comprise a piece of resistance wire on a substrate (commonly a small piece of double sided PCB) and successively dipped in energetic compounds. When a current is passed through the wire, the compounds are heated and err, go bang! DC FX
PK Roberts is getting confused with an igniter, which is as he says basically a piece of fuse wire in between a positive and negative current (think of a lightbulb filament) A microdet however is an igniter encapsulated within a plastic sleeve with I think black powder added, I'm sure the technical department of Le Maitre will be able to help you with chemical compounds etc.. I also think there is a member of the blue room that works for the tech department Regards

Personally I would prefer to use the D60/D80 range from oversea for personal bullet hits as they are alot smaller and not quite as powerful, you are referring to Non Frag Microdets which are wrapped in cardboard, these are alot safer for use with people nearby Dets wrapped in cork are generally used for bullet hits on buildings, tree etc.. No confusion, but perhaps a bit of over-simplification; the 'igniter' description is in essence 'how they work' (which was the original question). The outer 'layers' vary - the Le Maitre are either card or plastic tube (depending on their intended use) whereas the DeLaMare versions are like a large 'pill' and come in varying strengths.
