Franco
Hi, I don't know if this is the right place for this sort of question, but I don't know where else to go. I own an Engl Thunder 50 amp which has 4 12AX7 valves and 2 6L6GC valves. Yesterday whilst recording, the volume dropped vastly and I got some noise / distortion and I was on the clean channel. I left the amp overnight just incase it had overheated and tried it out today. All of the valves glow normally (as far as I am aware) but a friend of mine has informed me that this does not rule out a valve as a problem. The main problems I get now as I test the amp are as follows:The amp plays at a much lower amplitude than it used to.There is a low buzzing / humming / scratching and the overall sound is more distorted on all three channels. There is excessive feedback and occasionally a high pitched screeching sound when playing. Seeing as I am recording for my final major project at college I need to get this problem figured out and fixed asap so that I can get on with the work. I am hoping it is the 6L6 valves so that I can just order them and only suffer the waiting time of 7-10 working days as opposed to having to take the amp down to where I bought it in bath (I live in Gloucester) to have it looked over by their very busy technician (could take him a week to get round to it). Basically I am looking for advice which would enable me to pinpoint the problem (or at least find out if it is the valves or not) and hopefully theres something I don't know yet that will be brought to light. Any ideas? If more information is needed, please ask and I will try my best to test the amp / find out the info if it will help.
Simon Lewis
Hi, I don't know if this is the right place for this sort of question Probably not.... ;-)The main problems I get now as I test the amp are as follows:The amp plays at a much lower amplitude than it used to.There is a low buzzing / humming / scratching and the overall sound is more distorted on all three channels. There is excessive feedback and occasionally a high pitched screeching sound when playing. This might be a number of issues, but a faulty output transformer could well be the problem. I am hoping it is the 6L6 valves so that I can just order them and only suffer the waiting time of 7-10 working days as opposed to having to take the amp down to where I bought it you wouldn't actually buy some 6L6s just on the comments from an Internet Forum? Basically I am looking for advice which would enable me to pinpoint the problem I'd suggest getting it to a valve amp technician asap. If you assume it's the valves and simply replace them, you would a) waste money b) possibly damage your new valves c) waste a lot of time. The technician will be able to check what is actually wrong using test equipment. Unfortunately, we can only offer anecdotes and ESP.... StevieR
Also worth getting in touch with the manufacturer's technical dept. They might have some suggestions... Steve
