Andy Woodford
After much deliberation, I've opted to buy a pair of CA1001 K&F speakers with c2 controller. I'm considering powering with a digam amp. Am I likely to be sacrificing on sound quality compared to a used analogue amp in the same price rangehere (I want the best possible sound quality for my amp budget which is around 800 quid) an appropriate used digam comes in at around this. Any other amps I should be looking at? I'd prefer to stay away from anything in the 20Kg or higher category. Many thanks in advance.
Rich newby
If you can stretch the budget then the Crown Itech amps are some of the best around in this price range. I cant find any info on your speakers but the I-Techs can be picked up off ebay, new, for about £1,300. I would seriously consider these if you can stretch your budget. Dan Appleby
The rig I use on a regular basis uses digam 7000/5000 for the subs (Martin W8S), and they're pretty good for that - they're maybe not quite as ballsy as a CA18 or itechs or similar, but they do the job pretty well in my opinion. obviously can't really say what they're like for mid or high frequencies, but I'd say they'd be fine. I still can't get my head round how you can get that much output power from something that weighs 9kg... crazy! :D
Andy Woodford
Thanks for replies although to be fair having taken receipt of the speakers today, I've got a more fundamental question the speakers are rated as 250 W nominal, 500W programme and impedance listed as 6 ohms, Zmin. 4.8 ohms (no idea what this means) To be safe I was working on the assumption that I needed 500m w at 8 Ohm. Now I'm not so sure, if I need that much. Any help here appreciated before I can even look at which models might suit. Simon Lewis
500 W into 8Ohms would be appropriate, as long as you do not clip the amp. The Powersoft amps will only deliver this power for music type signals - pure sine waves at full power triggers the protection circuit.Having said that, they are quite nice amps.... Rob_Beech
Hi Andy, which particular DIGAM amp was you thinking about? The DIGAM 5000 is 750wpc at 8ohms, I'm not sure on the data for the DIGAM3000 although I'm not sure if they are still made, it would seem this is the one from the standard DIGAM series that would suit your needs. not got the specs but I would assume it would be around 600wpc at 6ohms. The 5000's and 7000's I use for my W8S subs work very well. Not had alot of experience with any of the other powersoft gear although I'm told the 4 channel ones are pretty good (something I'd like for monitors). Very efficient, notice the specs of the 7000. 1050wpc at 8ohms1910wpc at 4ohms3500wpc at 2ohms really working well towards the half the Z double the power rule. You do need to take into account what Simon says. they dont like being thrashed. they give a very clean output, but will soon run out of legs if you push them too hard. As always it would depend on your program material or your variation of it. If you buy one used the first thing you need to do is open it up and clean it out. they get very dusty around the back near the fan. also, check the powercon connector. These have been known to fail. Andy Woodford
So if I went with a Digam, sounds like I'd need to overspec the amp to ensure it has enough grunt. As a user of the amp, How would you rate the digam stuff against a really good analogue amp (say an MC2 E series).
Rob_Beech
I'd recommenrd the powersofts agaisnt alot of old analogue amps. There are better amps out there but they usually end up costing alot MORE, give out less "music" power and weigh as much as a small family hatchback. If this doens't bother you go for one of these. if you are concerned about weight then the DIGAM series are very good. I would prefer to use something like MA5000's in an install enviroment (although they produce less power on paper). but I dont fancy touring with such weight. not with the sort of things I do. Andy Woodford
Ended up buying the mc2 e15 in the end based on the "best amp you can afford" philosophy. (Actually it's a bit more than I can afford but they're rated as one of the best by nearly every co. I spoke to including the funktion one guys who use them exclusively)Gear lust is a terrible, terrible thing, Now I just have to wait aweek and a half till they arrive (dammit) thanks for suggestions even though I did end up doing a
