Working in Canada

Not sure if this is the right category to be asking this in, but I'm sure it will get moved if not.

I'm thinking of taking a couple of years away and going to visit some family I have in Canada. I'd quite like to hear peoples advice about working over there. In particular if anybody can tell me more about IATSE I would be grateful

Unless you're a Canadian citizen, you need a work permit, I'm not sure how easy they are to get. The IATSE looks like a fairly powerful union (have you been to their website? www.iatse-intl.org), interesting that in the list of member groups they put "stagehand" but no other technical theatre jobs - wonder if they just use "stagehand" as a general term.

I can give you quite a bit of help here, but you'll have to wait till I get home on Monday. In the meantime try travel agents for a copy of Canada News, that gives a simple breakdown of the various processes involved, having relatives out there certainly helps. IATSE in Vancouver were very helpful to me, but it's not the same story everywhere. I'll PM you on Monday.

I already looked into the work permit. Apparently, and you'll all be pleased to hear this, theatre technicians are counted as skilled labour, so it is less of a problem. Nice to know somebody appreciates us.
