Simple switch for pars

Ok bit of a daft one here,

I need to switch two short nose par 56's (300W) on and off from a 13A socket, I just need a switch to do this, so can I hook up a simple desk lamp style switch to a cable or do I need a 'rated' or speacially designed switch?

Cheers!

It should be rated at least as high as the fuse in your plug, probably best to go for >13A unless you can be sure that no one else will come along and add extra lanterns. If you fuse at 5A, then any household type switch would do.

Usual caveats about wiring and competency apply!

there's usually a switch on a 13A socket...

Yeah but our switches are A: 3 metres up from the ground and B: the type where you push a button rather than a switch. So I'm looking to place the switch somewhere ideal along the cable length.

The crossover style switching is a good idea but is too much for what I need.

This type of 'in-line' switch comes fitted as standard to pretty much all lightweight TV lamps (small fresnels, Redheads etc.) so track down a supplier of those and they should be able to flog you the switches as spares.

Yep, those are the ones I'm thinking of. Good solid clunky toggle switches.

[EDIT]

Talk to AC Lighting, they sell them.
