Thirdtap
'loSorry if the title does not help here is the problem. In one venue we have a system that enables a laptop / computer to be plugged in via an adaptor box on the side of the stage, down Cat 5 cable to another adaptor box into the projector!!! da da!!!! Power point run from the stage / lectern. The problem is that one box recently has broken and started smoking, so I thought whilst looking at getting a replacement would it be worth changing the system? Maybe a wireless version is cheaper and easier to use??? The system is needs to be very easy to set up as the hirers bring in different computers all the time usually with minimum set up time available. So it needs to be a system that can be configured easily, currently our system does not require system downloads or updates for each source used. If you need anymore information please ask. Many thanks for your help on this sunny day...
bruce
If the wires are there, then use them! Wireless will only add extra complexity, and additional ways for things to go wrong.
Pete McCrea
I'd replace the adaptors for a new set and stick with wires, as there is soo much less to go wrong and trouble shoot.
mac.calder
Sounds like your standard cat5 video extender. I have never heard of one that needs drivers (because they are basically a passive device, your PC/Laptop does not even notice it). I have used the VE120 Aten Video Extender and had no problems with it. I agree with the "Stay the hell away from wireless" sentiment. Where ever possible, one should use wires. They are more secure, they are more stable and they don't rely on environmental factors. And Cat5 is cheap as chips.
Thirdtap
Hi Just to clear up any confusion the current system does NOT use drivers or such like and this function we like as it is (almost) simple plug and play. Any recomendations as it might be that we have to spend out for a replacement? Thank you
BlueShift
I have found both the Kramer and Extron twisted pair interfaces to be excellent, and have used them successfully a few times now. usually the kramer units are slightly cheaper than the extron ones - and in this case, just as good... enbee
my general advice is don't rely on wireless for anything. I know it sounds cynical but wires have been used since electricity was invented. we know they work and its generally easy to spot if its broken
Andrew C
Some American is quoted as saying:- "A $2000 radio mic system could theoretically be very nearly as good as a $10 cable" and I believe him!
mac.calder
Hi Just to clear up any confusion the current system does NOT use drivers or such like and this function we like as it is (almost) simple plug and play. Sorry, but I am failing to see any confusion - I said that I have NEVER seen one that used drivers, because they are NOT NOTICED by the laptop/pc. Meaning, they are (just like most monitors) Plug And Play. Google for Cat5 Video Extender. Millions of places sell them, and they all do basically the same thing - Send the signal a long distance down cheap cable. Most support resolutions far in excess of what most data projectors support, so you should have no problems.
Pete McCrea
Something like this from Kramer would do the output end. I haven't made it to work yet otherwise I'd give you the list price...... PM me if you would like more info as we're a Kramer Dealer.
SeanT
Which end is broken and who is it made by, we (for whatever goddamn reason) have a cat 5 VGA box sitting on the shelf somewhere (but without the other end to match.....)Apart from that, go with the Kramer - I also have trouble imagining what sort of VGA over Cat 5 system would require drivers to be installed on the PC!!Curse the bastards as usual who didn't just use a long VGA run though.....
