[sUBTLE WIKI PLUG] If anyone would like to create a wiki article for any venues they have knowledge of, adding
[[Category:Venues]]

and

[[Category:Hemp Houses]]

tags into the article, this sort of research would be much easier[/sUBTLE WIKI PLUG]

The Alexandria Cinema, yes it is a theatre. It's a council owned theatre rented by Scott cinemas but NADMCS (NEWTON ABBOT & DISTRICT MUSICAL COMEDY SOCIETY) have the right to use it twice a year as they've been using it since the dawn of time, it's even in the cinema's contract  .

Completely hemp apart from the cinema screen on hand winches (weighs a flimmin ton!) which was an addition when they made it a cinema obviously.

Some photos Here, not brilliant but may help.

Kings Theatre Southsea is basically hemp.

Last summer we installed 6 powered bars - these are the first stage of what should eventually become 23 powered sets. There will then be about one third of all sets on power with about two thirds still hemp.

I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Brighton Theatre Royal

Isn't there still a (disused) chinaman in the grid there?

A couple more hemp houses for the mix:

Opera House, Buxton. (Until fairly recently their safety curtain was on a hand winch, that was a workout.)

(not terribly) Grand Opera House, York.

Both the Haymarket and the Anvil in Basingstoke are hemp houses although the Anvil has a few motor bars as well.

Out of interest the Anvil was built less that ten years ago but hemp was used as it was cheaper.

Theatre Royal, Margate is all hemp.

It claims to be the

second oldest theatre operating in Great Britain and is also the oldest un-restored theatre in the country, its splendid auditorium dating from the 1874 designs by J T Robinson
and having done some work there I can believe it.

Thankfully, the hemp sets have been renewed!
