6th level eq

Heres a fing

Can someone out there point me in the direction of a definition or description of the levels and shapes (I think) relative to digital controllers - buttworth etc,

Our systems spec say that they require 6th level eq for the Bass and Sub - what difference would 4th level make for instance?

Still learning at 43 (who'd have thort)

4th order = 24dB per octave crossover

6th order = 48dB per octave crossover

Looks like your system needs to have extremely sharp cutoff rates! Some digital units can achieve this. The difference between Butterworth, Lipshitz (sp?), Linkwitz-Riley etc. is down to filter theory and how the signal behaves in both amplitude and phase in and at the edge of the passband.

Have a look in the reference section of Rane.com for more information. Ensure you have your maths text book open ;-)

Simon,

4th order = 24dB per octave crossover

6th order = 48dB per octave crossover

I'm no noise boy, but surely you mean:

1st order =6dB per octave

2nd order =12dB per octave

3rd order =18dB per octave

4th order = 24dB per octave

5th order = 30dB per octave

6th order = 36dB per octave

Each cap and coil adding 6dB/octave?

Yes, you are completely right!

That will teach me to rattle off answers without engaging brain first!

I suspect that I had the rationale for Linkwitz Riley filters in mind, where even order Butterworth filters are cascaded to form a new filter of twice the slope with good electrical summation and zero acoustic lobing at the crossover frequency....
