Hi...I'm looking for tacky catholic statues etc....the type that light up.

It seems you can get them in America but preferably I'd like to be ordering them from somewhere nearer.

Has anyone come across anything like this before?!

Cheers,

Caz x

I don't know if they do tacky but Westminister Cathedral (not Wesminister Abbey - that's a different place) - which is the main catholic cathedral in England - has a large visitor shop with a lot of statues and other goods.

It's probably worth phoning them, they usually been very helpful to me on the phone (number on website) but how you say you want something tacky without offending them - you'll have to think about that!

We recently had to find a religious statue that lit up & despite having a prop buyer on the show, we could'nt find one for love nor money. The statues wer'nt too much of a problem - there are several Catholic websites (try www.cenacle.co.uk] & e-bay have loads too - but getting one that lit up was impossible so I'd be interested to know if you find one.

Good luck

I know this sounds bizzare but my first stop would be the cheap (one up from pound) shops along the high streets of wood green. They have alot of rather 'unique' religeous paraphanalia that I wouldnt give house space too, but could (and has been) just the thing for a show.

if you're completely stuck, and have a competent prop builder you could make one fairly easily. Make a plaster mould of an easy to get hold of normal statue. Coat the inside of the new mould with coat of casting resin, fairly thicj, depending on the size of the mould but leave a hollow inside for a bulb. remove the mould when it's set, paint and then hand over to a sparks to fit a pea bulb/low wattage bulb fixing and switch and lead. Easy.... well, maybe not easy, but possibble.

Try asking at a catholic church. Explain what you're after. But don't use the word "tacky" - perhaps something like "Cliche'd"

In fact - there used to be a shop in Glasgow that sold this sort of stuff - near the bottom of High St, opposite McChuills... Can't remember the name though - might have been "..something Grotto".

If you want suggestions for other tacky bits to look for... I've a friend who's family have a display cabinet full of such things - a pope plate, for example. Though my favourite is her glow-in-the-dark Jesus figurine.....
