Martin
I'm looking for a simple bit of software that will display images with smooth fades. Powerpoint almost works but the fades aren't slow enough. They need to last a few seconds to tie in with the lighting states. Also the software mustn't have any on screen controls as this is being projected in a show. Idealy the software should be free or a 30 day trial would be okay as the show only runs for 3 weeks. We currently have a PC laptop to run it from. JCoster
What about Macromedia Flash? 30-day free trial from macromedia.com. As much customisation as you want!
jhughes01
It turn out to be a cumbersome alternative, but have you considered importing the images into one of the multitude of free video editors. They should let you set transition speeds in A/B mode.
Martin
I should have also said that the software needs to work like powerpoint where you press a key to advance to the next image. Most software I have tried only lets you program like a video timeline, where you specify how long you want the image to display for. Thanks for the suggestions so far. videogod
There should be some kind of way to change the transition speed in PP? Seems like the most simple solution 4 u!
henny
try PicturesToExe http://www.wnsoft.com/ PicturesToExe creates presentation in stand-alone EXE file. Using a clean-looking, intuitive interface, you select pictures from any combination of folders on your system. Then press the Create button. In just moments, you've produced an .exe file that, when run, displays the images with the options you've selected. Options let you specify automatic or manual sequencing, pick the timer interval, adjust font and background properties, and decide whether you want the sequence to run once and terminate or to repeat continuously. You can also add a MIDI, or MP3-based soundtrack and associate each picture with a .wav file. PicturesToExe is a nice way to share your favorite images with others in a compact, easy-to-email form. Ability to create AVI video file. will also make a video DVD slideshow

Powerpoint only has three speeds and the slowest is still very fast! Henny, that looks like exactly what I'm looking for. Cheers.

Ok listen up Go to the slideshow drop down menu at the top of PP, select custom animation. This will bring up a new menu on the right of the screen, right click on the animation/transition you want change the timings on and click the effect options button. This will bring up a pop-up menu with a tab labelled timings, this menu will allow you to adapt timings to the precise second. There are also things like rehearse timings menu etc to help you iron out any kinks :)Hope this helps, and as with all MS software, I hope we have a similar version of PP and I haven't just given you useless info. good luck :P
Cougar
I think if my memory serves me correctly that that function was only introduced from PP 2002 or 2003 editions onwards. I haven't got a earlier version than 2003 so I cant check that. But it definitely works like that 2003 edition onwards. HTH Evan
bruce
I could be wrong, but if I remember correctly the procedure described above is for setting the timings for animations within slides. It doesn't let you change the speed of dissolve between slides.
london sound
Transition time has been there since at least 1999 (oldest version off PP I have) and it has always been variable, timings of animations within slides is a seperate issue. Ian
bruce
Really? where? As far as I can see, the timings relate to a. the length of time any particular slide is displayed within an automatic slideshow, andb. the rate of "build" within an individual slide. But as far as I can see, you cannot control in any detail the slide transition speed - ie in a non-automated display, when you press a key to move on to the next slide, and you have selected "smooth fade" as the transition, you only have 3 options - "slow, medium, fast". The OP was looking for an "even sloooower" option.
Pete McCrea
In Macuser which I was reading last night, there was a tutorial on using Quick Time Pro for video editing. It also noted that it's possible to import a series of still images into quick time and the set their durations and fade times. Quick Time Pro is a £19.99 software key that unlocks the features of Quick Time player. So if you have Quicktime on the machine, you'll have Quick Time Pro for £19.99. Olie
I think Screen Monkey can do what you want and it is free. You can definatly set transition times of any length. Does not currently run as a slide show though. You would have to select the image at the time you want it to come up. You can use the F keys to control it without haveing to have any on-screen controls.
SparkySteve
Custom Animation in Powerpoint is only for the content in the slide but, I have made a number of such projects in the past and quite simply all you need to do it place the next image over the top of the previous and add a custom animation to it. Make sure you set the trigger to 'with click' and it will progress to the next image when you hit space or the mouse.
