Barebones DMX Demux

Hi All,

I'm after a barebones DMX demux that drives 6 channels. DMX512 - 6x 0-10v

I will be mounting it in a custom box, so only need the PCB. I'm not bothered if it has chassis connectors or terminal points.

I seem to recall Maplin doing something similar, but after looking on their website, I can't find it.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Cheers

Ben

Flying the flag for New Zealand, I shoudl also point you at JPK Systems ltd, popular with the laserist community.

Of course, you may find it cheaper to pick up a Botex / showtec / whatever its called this week... I was going to put a demux board in an old Betapack Mk1, but its just not cost effective to do so.

  • 3 years later...

I was looking at the same thing

I want to build a 24 channel DMX to analouge aka 0-10v converter

to run 4 pulsar analouge dimmer racks

and I want to be able to mount it in a 19" 1u case

anyone got any idears

ive seen tones of plans but nothings making much sence

thanks

Just buy one (Link) it'll save you having to worry about trying to understand schematic diagrams. By the time you've bought all the necessary parts and a rack mounting case, a ready made one will be cheaper too.

problem is im on a budget ,and although thats not a bad price its gona cost me like £70 to make up the adapters to go from the 25pin dsubs to 8pin locking

but thanks for that link , thats cheaper than what I found

The Milford Instruments DMX to 4 analogue channel demux (data sheet here) costs £49 + VAT and you're going to need six of them to get 24 channels. That's before you start buying power supplies or building anything.

Seems like a no brainer to me.

Yeah I see your point on that , but as I said , what about the 25-pin D-subs to 8-pin Analogue , every where I look there like £50 - £60 , and if I make my own its still about £40 and threes no garuntee it would work

what do you recommend?

Go to your nearest computer shop and ask to look through their junk box for a fully wired parallel port printer cable. You'll also often find them at jumble sales and in charity shops. Chop off the useless end and there you have a ready wired 25-way D, that's the hard bit done. All you need then is a plastic project box, four 8-pin DIN connectors and some 8-way cable. Shouldn't cost more than £15 in total. Even if you build your own demux, you're still going to need to spend that much on four 8-pin DIN cables.

Or a fully wired long 25pin to 25 pin lead, cut in half , 2 cables and no wasted end

This is more relavant to the OP from 3 years ago, but I thought I'd throw this link in anyway.

This is an 8ch demux (pcb only), for £40

It works great as an upgrade to an analogue 6ch dimmer. You can even power the demux from pin 7 on the dimmers 8pin din socket. Just put the unit in a box with an 8pin din socket and you're away.

I'm guessing that you're not including your time in that figure, seeing as you consider making your own demux a cost-effective solution... so where do you get the £40 figure from?

Looking at Maplin (who will by no way be the cheapest for this project), you're looking at about £4 for the DIN connectors, another £4 or so for the D25, so unless you're spending £32 on cable...

As you said, no guarantee it would work, but I'd more willing to bet that I cable I made myself would work, rather than a demux I'd made myself!
