Sony Minidisc recorder

Hello All,

I'd like to Rack-Mount some consumer Minidisc and CD players in a standard 19" rack.

Having checked specs, the units are 430mm wide, and the standard size for a rackmount is 435mm - so I'm assuming this works. But 1U on a rack is 44.45mm, and the units are 95mm high with projections - so you're looking at using 3U but only a few mm into the 3rd U.

This wouldn't be a problem if I could put a blanking plate across the 3rd, predominently empty U.

Is this conceivable? Would I be able to - for instance - install a blanking plate despite a small "invasion" in the space from the hardware below?

Alternatively, is there a better system that 19" rackmounts for consumer hardware? I'd like to "lock"/secure the equipment into the rack, and I'd like to attach the rack to a work surface permanantly.

Also - is there an issue with heat exchange and ventilation on consumer units over units like the Denon ones (and so on) specifically designed for 19" mounting?

Anyone done anything similar?

Cheers

Nick

Nick,

You can generally do whatever you want depending on your metalwork skills ;)

Three methods I have seen are:

1. Make some rackmount ears and fix them onto the units

2. Use a rack tray. As Peter said, you can often remove the feet and/or screw up through the rack tray into the screw holes for the feet.

3. Use a rackmount adaptor (the "securerack" on peter's link). This has a movable clamping bar at the top. Disadvantage is that it takes up more space.

Never assume anything about rackmounts unless you have checked it. I once had a large wooden console made for an install by a professional chippie who had supposedly done this sort of thing many times before. He still got the spacing of the rack strip wrong!

Heat is unlikely to be a problem with a CD player or minidisc, although other stuff in your rack could cause it to get hot.

Hope this helps,

Dave.

If you don't want to make your own you can buy these for some domestic players. Canford stock ears for some Denon cd players, and I've seen them for Sony MD players too. I think they are about £15.

Hi Nick,

We sell a few 2,3 or 4U universal rack mounts specifically for racking domestic type equipment. Depending on the kit you are trying to rack, it is generally a painless operation. I say generally, occasionally one peice of kit comes along and it turns into a bit of pain.

Concerning the 2 and a bit U your item turns into, does the player have feet on the botton? I find these get in the way of the rack mount base so by removing the feet ( usually a single screw per foot) It then should fit into 2U

Good luck

Paul

Thanks all for your feedback.

I'll take the feet off the units and do some measurements, and see if they'd fit a 2u secure-mounting unit.

Cheers

Nick.

Hi - I was wondering if it was possible to rackmount the sony MDS-JE480 minidisc recorder using a rack shelf??

Dimensions of the recorder - in mm - w 430 h 95 d 285

Dimensions of the shelf - in mm - w 430 h 75 (can be 86 if the bottom is flipped over) d 305

Shelf I'm looking at is on http://www.canford.co.uk/commerce/resource...etails/2450.pdf

I wondered if it was possible to remove the feet on the recorder so that it would fit height wise, as width and depth are fine....

thanks
