stuartglen
I am doing a rock show for my school in a few months, I have a strand mx 244 act 6 dimmersdemux 12x par 646x strand prelude various pat 23's and frensels It's a concert with the audince walking in and out and I would like to have some colours on the floor, I would like this group of lights to be in sync with the music aka controlled by the beat of the music, however I would like to control the lights on the stage via the scene faders. Anyone have any idea how to do this on an mx 24. I have had a look at the manual but is only reffered to using sound to control scenes, I would like to use it to control the step of the fx section. Anyone have an idea of how to do this?
Stu
It's a long time since I've used a desk from the MX series, but it is possible to run FXs from an audio feed - you can plug a feed from the sound desk into the back of it, I can't remember wether it's on XLR or Jack tho. Anyway, once you've done this you can tell a FX to run from the Audio/Midi input (on the line of buttons where you can choose how the FX runs (chase, flicker etc) you can select Audio/MIDI), and there is also a fader in the FX section which you can use to set the sensitivity (marked Audio/MIDI I believe)... Anyway I remember it not being particularly effective, you might have to experiment to get the best effect - making sure there is plenty of bass in the signal for it to react off. travis1234
I thought for a mo there you meant run the sound via the MX (I.e mics/music) If my memory serves me right, there is a manual somewhere on the web. I found it once a few years ago with a simple search. Its pretty easy to program on the desk once youv'e got the manual. Otherwise its tricky but thats because ive not used one in many a year. Hope this gibberish helps!
J Pearce
Its on a jack input. Never tried it, we were going to hook it up for something at college, but found another way to do what we wanted. The MX will also cue from MIDI, can you borrow a midi keyboard from your music department, and find a monkey (read year 7) to tap the beat on the keyboard??This leaves the desk free and clear for you to light the stage. Goto www.strandarchive.co.uk for the manual and more.
sparkyweb
If memory serves correctly it does need to have a fair bit of bass for it to work satisfacturally.

dbuckley
... get the bass guitar on its own or the mix form the sound desk, to feed into the mx?Its really the kick drum you want. That out on a spare aux works a treat with desks I've tried it with. Need to ensure theres no earth loops of course, which can be fun, easiest way is to run the light desk off the soundman's power, and use an opto isolated DMX splitter. Oh! M24, thats pre-DMX isnt it... hmmm... that could be harder...
Just Some Bloke
Oh! M24, thats pre-DMX isnt it... hmmm... that could be harder...Yes, the M24 ran D54 not DMX. However, the OP has an MX (24-way) which is a much more modern desk and does run DMX. For a small lighting board the MX was always my favourite. Shame they stopped making it. Yes, all the comments above are appropriate - it will work off a sound feed if you're careful how you set it up. You will still be able to use the subs and memories on top of the FX. Enjoy. Light Console
Hmm mine has an old 5 pin DIN socket as audio input. As I recall, the sound to light function on it is poor. It does however leave the subs free for playback. MIDI as I recall locks you out. I can't get to the desk until 1st May as it is at the very back of my storeroom (read bedroom!) If you want I can fire it up then...
stuartglen
it is an mx 24, it supports d54 and DMX, I think the sound input is a 5 pin din
