erik10_4
I have some lanterns which are clearly due a re-wire. A search of previous threads seems to confirm my belief that I need to get hold of some high temperature wire and braided sleeve. Unfortunately the only thread I could find gave sources which either sell items in bulk (about 25metres of braided sleeving for example) or I could not identify, from the descriptions provided whether the supplier stocked the correct product. The thread was a bit old. Can anyone point me at a supplier who stocks and sells the appropriate products for an internal rewire in reasonable lengths (about 5 metres max of each)? Product identification (I.e what suppliers call the items) would be ultra helpful. P.S I am VERY safety conscious and have good basic electrical skills, so I'm not about to do anything dangerous! erik10_4
silicone mains cable (3 core) rated up to usually 180C ............ there is usually a ceramic connector inside. Thanks for this Ampcats....Just a couple of points I'd like to clarify: 1) If originally 'integral', the wires from the lampholder must have been split at some time stage since they already feed into a porcelain connector and then run from that connector block to another affixed to the backplate of the lantern (I.e two porcelain connectors altogether). Stange thing is, if this is incorrect, why on earth would someone have split the cables on all 6 lanterns ?? 2) Do you think it would be better to buy new lampholders (assuming cable is integral)? Jivemaster
RS will supply Silicone three core and single and prob Glass braided single too. Your choice according to location. Who supplies you normally? Most entertainment elec dealers should supply heat resist cable by the metre. The two ceramic term blocks could be intentional or could be as a result of an earlier conversion from tungsten to halogen. Yes if there is any doubt of the state of the lampholders change them. in a good holder a lamp gives about its rated life in a cooked holder a lamp may only last a couple of hours. erik10_4
Thanks for the replies folks. The sources provided are helpful and its just a pity I have to do everything mail/online order as the postage whacks up the price (haven't managed to find a stage supplier locally - in fact I am hard pushed to find an electrical shop selling anything but bulk standard domestic products!). Regards Erik :)
Nicktaylor
Why not open a cash account with Radiospares? Presumably you are either a business or have association with a group that could sign up. Postage is free.
jpitkin
AC lighting will no doubt sell you exactly what you want, RS, while having free postage is more expensive per item most of the time. Having said that, we use both for various things, fortunatly we have an RS trade counter down the road, and when you need something quick its hard to beat them! Nicktaylor
I buy from AC all the time as well. Often we pick up stuff, but of course there is ashipping charge if it is sent. I get the impression the post originator would be concerned about that extra charge? I also have an RS trade desk down the road! :)
erik10_4
I get the impression the post originator would be concerned about that extra charge? I don't know if 'concerned' is quite the right word, just as I said earlier, it increases the overall price. Truth is, I am not a business, just helping out my wife and villagers (with no budget) who are staging performances to raise money for local charities. Started out hiring kit but gradually began collecting sound and light equipment and got the bug! I now have a decent enough 'rig' for local halls (though not quite what you guys are used to I suspect!) I obviously have to do a fair amount of work on the cheaper stuff I have collected to make it roadworthy and have to count the pennies a bit (do I hear violins?). Hope this explains what may sound a miserly approach! :)
