Part Time Lighting Design/Electrics courses

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could pass on some advice! I am interested in doing a course in lighting design/electrics. I have been working in the corporate events lighting industry for the last 10 years and have a lot of experience working at many different venues across London. I have recently started a new events lighting company with two colleagues - one of whom is a fully qualified electrician and the other like myself has many years experience working in the corporate events industry. I already have a degree in multimedia/design (but not lighting!).

The problem is, although I have a lot of basic lighting experience, I still feel there is a lot I personally don’t know and would like to learn – especially regarding electrics. I would also like to broaden my ideas when it comes to lighting design – learn more about different colour combinations, more about lighting desks/controllers, DMX and moving heads etc.

I really like the look of the Rose Bruford course – the fact that I live just down the road from the college would be a big bonus, but it is a degree course over three years, it’s a shame they don’t do a part time course– can anyone tell me a little about the structure of the course, is it 5 days a week solid or is it slightly more relaxed, for example I know some degree courses are only 3 days a week.

Obviously because I am working pretty much full time, I would like to find a course that is part time – I could probably manage 2/3 days a week, as I work mainly evenings during the week.

I think the C&G 1820 course at Paddington would be a more realistic bet because of it being part time and only over a year. However, I have heard mixed reviews about it - does it cover lighting design, desks, intelligent lighting, DMX, electrics in detail etc – is it any good or would I be wasting my time?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for your time reading this,
