Sim
Doing the school version trying to think of some house music. Never seen the real thing live so don't know if they even use house music in the real production. Any thoughts? or Suggestions of Music? mac.calder
I would play it safe with some classical piano, or ask your MD to compose an instrumental medly of songs from the show.
paulears
With the huge range of styles of music in les mis, I would go for something simple too - quiet and non-intrusive and not that well known - maybe something french? Debussey, perhaps... I rareley play music from the show people are about to see, unless the music is so well known that that is one of the reasons the audience came - sometimes a different arrangement - the royal philharmonc playing their version is quite nice. Whatever you do, never play a cast album with the same arrangements as the audience will hear - the real thing always sounds worse (even if it isn't)
greateastern
When we did it we played somethign that became known as 'The wailing lady' can't remember exactly it was but pplayed fairly quietly any music is OK as long as its not too upbeat I would guess. gareth
What about ...... silence? Why does there have to be walk-in music? Randomly inappropriate music playing while the house is open before curtain-up on a performance is a little bug-bear of mine - I can't stand it! Sometimes it's appropriate to have music - but often it's not. ;) - topic moved to Sound.
Bobbsy
Following on from Gareth's post, when you see a professional show in the West End they rarely...if ever...use walk-in music. Since there tends to be a real orchestra tuning and so on, this makes sense. In this case, if you really want walk in music, I might see if I could find some form of French folk music...certainly something obscure with French lyrics. Sim
I agree, and considering its a school preformance it will just make them talk louder before the show.
